A/T - 404 Noise after Reinstallation
TSB: 85-48SUBJECT: CHRYSLER 404
PROBLEM:
Whining, grinding, tinny noise, after unit has been out of the car, and re-installed.
CAUSE:
Rear cover dented, either on output shaft dimple, or transfer shaft dimple, causing gear to contact cover -- hence a noise when re-installed in vehicle.
SOLUTION:
That particular unit -- that cover -- has two little dimples (shown on either side of the arrow) -- and when going back up into the car with it, if you aren't careful, they will bend in, and then the gear will grind on that plate.
