SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Customer concern for grinding or ticking sound in speedometer.

DIAGNOSIS

Road test the car to verify the condition. If vehicle is warm (above 60 degrees) the noise may not be readily apparent..

The sound may be caused by interference between the cable housing connector and the dash panel opening. Use the following procedure to correct the interference.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

2. Remove the instrument cluster (refer to the 1983 Front Wheel Drive service manual for Removal Procedure (#81-270-3004).

3. Release the spring clip and push the speedometer cable housing back into the instrument panel housing far enough to gain access to the speedometer cable opening in the instrument panel. Cover the cable housing to prevent chips from entering the cable.

4. Using the side of a 1/8" drill bit or small rotary file and an electric drill, enlarge the hole (Figure 1) in the instrument panel to approximately 1" in diameter. (You are in effect removing the boss molded into the panel.) This will prevent the interference between the speedometer cable housing and instrument panel.
NOTE: PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION NOT TO DAMAGE THE WIRING OR OTHER ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS DURING THE GRINDING OPERATION. DO NOT TRY TO USE A HOT KNIFE FOR THIS OPERATION.

Use a vacuum cleaner to remove the grinding chips from the instrument panel.
5. Reinstall the instrument cluster.

NOTE: PULL THE CABLE HOUSING THROUGH THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FAR ENOUGH TO ATTACH THE CABLE TO THE SPEEDOMETER BEFORE INSTALLATION INTO THE DASH PANEL. THIS WILL PROVIDE POSITIVE ENGAGEMENT OF THE CABLE INTO THE SPEEDOMETER HEAD.

6. Reconnect the battery and road test for proper speedometer operation.

POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty
