Transaxle


REMOVAL
1. Remove battery and battery tray, then the air filter/air flow sensor assembly and support.
2. Disconnect and clear harnesses, pipes, hoses and cables attached to transaxle.
3. Disconnect ball socket from selector lever on transaxle.
4. With vehicle on the ground, drain transaxle and disconnect anti-sway bar link rods from A-arms.
5. Raise vehicle, then remove lower ball joint from A-arms, using separator tool No. 0709-4 or equivalent.
6. Remove halfshafts, converter housing inspection plate, three torque converter bolts, dipstick tube nut and three starter motor bolts.
7. Attach a hook to transaxle and apply a slight lift, then remove the silent block and its shaft.

8. Lower engine/transaxle assembly train as far as possible and support engine using crossbar tool No. 0911-A1 with supports No. A2 or equivalents, Fig. 1.
9. Turn operating screw on crossbar a few turns, then remove transaxle to engine assembly bolts.
10. Disconnect transaxle from engine and install torque converter clamp 0315A or equivalent.
11. Lower and remove transaxle from under vehicle.

INSTALLATION
1. Ensure centering bushing is in place in the crankshaft and centering dowels are in place on cylinder block.

2. Apply a small amount of CALYSOL grease on center pin of torque converter when torque converter is fully engaged (X=0.2756 inch), Fig. 2.
3. Install new NYLSTOP nuts, wave washers and differential side carrier grease seals. Pack grease inside two ridges of the seals.
4. Attach transaxle to engine with four retaining bolts. Remove converter clamp before attaching transaxle.
5. Remove crossbar and tilt engine/transaxle assembly to a horizontal position using a block tackle.
6. Install silent block shaft with limiting washer. Tighten to specifications. Coat threads with hard duty Loctite.
7. Install silent block and dipstick tube. Tighten to specifications.
8. Reconnect harnesses, pipes, hoses and cables attached to transaxle.
9. Install and tighten converter bolts, then the halfshafts.
10. Tighten right halfshaft support bearing bolts to specifications and remove protector.
11. Install lower suspension ball joints and lower vehicle to its wheels.
12. Connect anti-sway bar link rods and adjust gear selector cable and kickdown cable.
13. Install air filter support, air filter/air flow sensor assembly, battery tray and battery.
14. Refill the transaxle with Dexron II transaxle fluid and bleed cooling system.
