BULLETIN NO. 399
DATE: NOVEMBER, 1990
SUBJECT: GLOVE BOX COMPARTMENT REPLACEMENT
MODELS: ALL 405 VEHICLES
In order to properly replace the glove box on a 405, the dashboard must first be removed. This is a more detailed version of the procedure as indicated in the workshop manual. This procedure allows for more time than what is stated in the Suggested Repairs Times. However the same damage code and operation number should be used. Proceed as follows:
- Remove the steering wheel
- Remove the three blanking plugs (1) using a small screwdriver
- Remove the three 10 mm bolts (1) and lift off the instrument cluster visor
- Remove the phillips-head screws (2) on either side of the console that secure the side panels
- Unclip and remove the right and left console side panels
- Remove the left and right side kickpanel trim
- Remove the four # 10 torx screws (3) that secure the steering column cover
- Remove the upper and lower steering column covers (before removing the lower cover, first unplug the dash light dimmer wire and unclip the horn wire connector, if equipped)
- Remove the storage compartment (4)
- Remove the ashtray and radio
- Remove screws (5) and (6) behind ashtray and radio
- Remove screws (7) (if a 5.5 mm socket is not available, a 1/4" socket will work)
- Unplug all electrical connectors behind center console
- Remove the instrument cluster filler strip (8) by pulling it straight up
- Remove the two # 15 torx screws (9); remove the heater/radio facia panel and cruise control/fog light switch panel
- Remove the two # 15 torx screws (10); tilt the instrument cluster toward you and disconnect the electrical connectors and speedometer cable
- Lift the instrument cluster up and out (be careful not to disturb the small rubber grommets in the dash that support the cluster)
- Remove the wiper, directional and cruise control switches
- Remove screws (11)
- Remove # 15 torx screws (12); push heater control panel inward to disengage locating pins
- Remove # 30 torx screws (13) from hood release handle
- Open fuse box door
- Remove 10 mm bolts from underdash crash pad (14)
- Remove the four 13 mm steering column mounting nuts; allow column to hang down
- Remove fuse box connectors (a) and (b)
- Remove relay bracket under left side of steering column support by removing a single 10 mm nut
- Remove dashboard reinforcement bolt (15)
- Remove ground connection (16) on right side kickpanel
- Unplug right and left side dashboard harness connectors
- Unplug brake light switch (and clutch pedal cruise control switch if equipped)
- Remove the three nuts (17) securing the dashboard to the firewall. This is most easily accomplished by using a 10 mm socket with a universal joint and a long 1/4" drive extension
- Remove dashboard mounting bolts (18) and (19)
- Remove bolt (20) behind heater-A/C control panel
- Remove strut (21) secured at (22) to the lower part of the dash and at (23) to the gear shift support
- Clear away the speedometer cable, instrument cluster harness, and heater-A/C control panel
- Protect the console with a fender cover
- Remove the dashboard
- Position the dashboard on a bench so that the back side is facing toward you and angled up
- Remove the glove box light
- Remove the glove box mounting screws, located as follows:
- one phillips-head screw inside the glove box
- two phillips-head screws on the left side (driver side) of the glove box (do not lose the metal bracket between the glove box and dashboard)
- two phillips-head screws along the top edge (one is immediately above the striker, the other at the top right corner)
- Remove the single 10 mm bolt from the lower right (passenger side) corner of the tubular glove box support frame
- The glove box and support frame can now be removed from the dash as a unit by sliding it down and to the rear
- Reinstall components in the reverse order of disassembly
- Ensure that non-return washers (24) are in position on locating dowels before refitting dashboard to firewall
- Torque steering wheel nut to 22 ft.lbs.
