No Start After Automatic Car Wash

Fig. 1 ECU Sealant Locations:

On models with VIN Nos. up to 506980, the drain holes on the sides of the cowl may be plugged. This condition will not allow fluids to drain quickly enough, therefore flooding the ECU. After a period of several hours, the engine will start.

To correct this problem, proceed as follows:

1. Remove the cover from the ECU, then remove all debris from the drain holes.
2. Ensure lefthand side passage is clear through the wheel arch by pushing back on the plastic inner fender lip from the wheel arch side.
3. On the righthand side, remove the windshield washer bottle from the cowl, then clean the drain hole as done in step 2.
4. Disconnect electrical connector from the ECU, then remove the three 10 mm hex nuts.
5. Remove the ECU, then pry out plastic plug from the breather hole. With the breather hole in the lowest position, shake out all water.
6. Heat ECU with a hair drier until all moisture is removed.
7. Apply 3M non-acetic silicone sealer, part No. 08660 (red), or 08670 (black). Do not use substitute sealers. Apply sealer to the following areas:
a. Breather hole at the bottom of the housing.
b. Three holes with plastic grommets.
c. Two lower holes with Phillips head screws.
d. The seam between the lid and the base of the housing, along the bottom edge, up the sides to level A-A above the center side metal tabs, Fig. 1.
e. In the area near the mounting flanges, sealant must be applied to the seam on the front side of the housing.
8. Install ECU onto bracket, connect electrical connector, then install plastic cover.
