Engine: Service and Repair


It is necessary to remove the engine and transmission as an assembly.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain coolant, transaxle fluid and engine oil.
2. Remove lower engine mount junction bracket.
3. Disconnect front header pipe from exhaust manifold and anti-sway bar link rods from lefthand A-frame arm.
4. Partially remove left wheelwell mud shield, propping it away from vehicle.
5. Remove lower suspension ball joint using separation tool No. 0709 or equivalent.
6. Remove lower engine mount, then the halfshafts from differential. Do not separate from hubs.
7. Evacuate A/C system and remove remove compressor. Plug all A/C system lines.
8. Remove battery, battery tray and air filter/air flow sensor assembly.
9. Disconnect all harnesses, pipes, hoses, cables and link rods attached to engine/transmission assembly.
10. Remove distributor cap and rotor, fasteners to relay housing, radiator, alternator belt, power steering pulley, tensioning slide and pump hose.
11. Drain power steering hydraulic system.

12. Install lifting bar tool No. 0102-D or equivalent, with hooks. Fig. 1.
13. Remove upper engine mount and transaxle silent block. Lift engine for clearance, then lower engine/transmission assembly through bottom of engine compartment.
14. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tighten all components to specifications.
b. Use new NYLSTOP nuts and hose clamps.
c. Install new differential side carrier seals using installation pads No. 0317-G and S, or equivalents. Pack grease inside two ridges of seals.
d. Charge A/C system using a suitable charging station.
e. Refill transaxle, engine and power steering reservoir.
