Catalytic Converter: Testing and Inspection


1. Run the engine until normal operating temperature is attained.
2. Stop the engine and remove the exhaust test tap cap located upstream of the catalytic converter. CAUTION TEST TAP WILL BE VERY HOT!

3. Connect an emissions analyzer to the test tap and start the engine. Run the engine at 1800 rpm for 30 sec., then let the engine return to idle rpm and note the analyzer readings.
4. Stop the engine, remove the analyzer and replace the test tap cap.
5. Install the analyzer pickup in the tail pipe. Run the engine at 1800 rpm for 30 sec., then let the engine return to idle rpm and note the analyzer readings. A significant reduction in emissions should have occurred. If not remove the catalytic converter and inspect for damage or signs of contamination. Replace the catalytic converter if necessary.
