Removal/Installation


1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove battery and hood.
2 Drain coolant and remove overflow reservoir.
3. Disconnect ground cable from cylinder head and all connectors from power supply cable.
4. Disconnect all engine harness electrical connectors at body multiple connectors.
5. Disconnect transmission oil cooler lines at radiator. Support lines in an elevated position to prevent loss of fluid.
6. Disconnect left exhaust pipe, accelerator cable and kickdown cables. Do not disconnect cruise control cable.
7. Remove power steering reservoir without disconnecting lines.
8. Remove air conditioning compressor without disconnecting lines. Move compressor clear of area.
9. Remove fan and shroud from radiator.
10. Remove air filter, air flow sensor assembly and air preheat system.
11. Remove electronic idle regulation electro valve from right valve cover.
12. Disconnect fuel feed hose, injector ramp return hose and cruise control vacuum hose.
13. Disconnect heater hoses from front of right cylinder head, then disconnect hose and ignition sensor connector from rear of left cylinder head.

14. Disconnect steering column at coupling, Using special bolts No. 1511C or equivalent, lower front crossmember about 2 inches (dimension a), Fig. 3.
15. Remove starter motor bolts (do not remove starter), and bellhousing inspection covers.

16. Lock flywheel using flywheel locking tool No. 0144B or equivalent, Fig. 4. Remove torque converter bolts using socket No. KM-J36301 or equivalent.
17. Remove flywheel locking tool installed previously, then hold torque converter in position using clamp No. 0318 or equivalent, using care not to distort referenced section of flywheel.
18. Remove upper transmission assembly bolts and dipstick tube mounting bolt from cylinder head.
19. Disconnect exhaust system and clear to one side.

20. Remove two engine mount to crossmember nuts. Lift engine using a hoist until transmission contacts floor pan. Install brace tool No. 0125 and pad No. 0156 or equivalents, to support transmission, Fig. 5.
21. Remove the two lower transmission to engine bolts.
22. Carefully remove engine from vehicle and place on engine stand.
23. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten to specifications.
