Piston Pin: Service and Repair
Fig. 23 Piston & rod orientation:
1. Remove circlips and drive out pins from pistons. Check condition of small end bushings. Replace faulty connecting rods.
2. Install connecting rods to pistons noting the proper orientation for left bank (pistons 1, 2 & 3) and right bank (pistons 4, 5 & 6), Fig. 23, then install oiled piston pins and circlips. Maintain proper piston/piston pin matching.
3. Fit piston rings into their grooves, keeping slots 120° apart from each other.
Fig. 24 Piston ring installation:
4. Place expander (3), Fig. 24, in slot positioned at (x).
5. Install expander rings (4) offset by .79-1.97 inches with respect to (x).
6. Install piston rings (5) and (6) at 120° from each other with TOPC and PC marks facing up.
7. Ensure that liner and piston pairs were properly matched on disassembly. Position piston in liner assembly so that piston crown arrow is turned toward timing chain and liner and block marks are aligned.
8. Lubricate liners with oil, then insert pistons through underside of liners and install connecting rod bearing halves.
