Girling Brake Service


REMOVAL

1. Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
2. Loosen parking brake cable locknuts, then remove adjusting nuts.

3. Remove plug from drum, Fig. 1, then insert a screwdriver through back plate and move parking brake lever outward to release brake shoes.
4. Reinstall plug, then remove drum.

5. Remove lower return spring using a suitable tool, Fig. 2.
6. Release upper return spring, then position a suitable clamp on brake cylinder and move shoes outward as far as possible.
7. Remove adjusting lever with spring, spacer cup and pushrod.
8. Remove hold-down springs, then the leading and trailing shoes.
9. Disconnect parking brake cable from lever, then remove return spring.

INSPECTION

1. Clean drum and back plate with suitable solvent.
2. Check for proper sealing of the pistons.
3. Inspect rubber boots for wear or damage.
4. Check drum for excessive wear and grind if necessary.
5. Replace any damaged or excessively worn components.

INSTALLATION

1. Lightly lubricate brake shoe pressure pads on back plate.
2. Install leading shoe with hold-down spring.
3. Insert end of lower return spring through hole in leading shoe.
4. Attach parking brake cable to lever.
5. Connect short end of upper return spring, then install trailing shoe.

6. Attach lower return spring to trailing shoe using a suitable tool, Fig. 2.

7. Position automatic adjuster nut .197 inch (5 mm) from stop on yoke, then install pushrod, Fig. 3.
8. Connect upper return spring to leading shoe.
9. Install spacer cup, then the adjustment lever with spring. Ensure lower arm of spring passes behind the anchor.
10. Install brake drum, wheel and tire assembly.
11. Check master cylinder fluid level and replenish as necessary.
12. Check brake pedal for proper feel and return.
13. Lower vehicle and road test.
