Subject: 1986 505 4HP22 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION GEARSHIFT SELECTOR ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE AND READJUSTMENT PROGRAM
DEALER ACTION:
ALL 1986 CARS WITH A V.I.N. PRIOR TO 0395964 MUST BE CHECKED FOR PROPER OPERATION OF THE GEARSHIFT SELECTOR DURING P.D.I. AND ADJUSTED IF NECESSARY.
1986 505 models are equipped with a new four speed ZF 4HP22 automatic transmission. The adjustment procedure for gearshift selector is not the same as the method indicated in our transmission workshop manual for the 3HP22.
Adjustment Procedure:
ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE:
1) Place gearshift selector in "P" Park position.
2) Raise vehicle on lift.
3) With transmission lever in "P" as shown on Page 2 (full rearward detent), loosen shift rod lock nut; remove rod retaining clip and rod bushing from transmission lever. Adjust rod length so that rod bushing aligns precisely with centerline of transmission lever stud.
Adjustment Procedure:
4) Press rod bushing on to transmission lever stud and re-install rod retaining clip.
5) Then holding shift rod to prevent it from rotating on ball stud, tighten lock nut. With lock nut tightened, check to make certain that rod socket is square with ball stud axis. (At lower end of gearshift selector).
6) Lower vehicle and check for proper gearshift selector operation and ensure that engine starts only in "N" and "P" positions. With parking lights on, check that the gearshift indicator (cursor) aligns and is illuminated for each selector lever position. If necessary, push down gently on indicator lens and move it forward or rearward as required.
