Engine: Service and Repair


1. Drain cooling system and disconnect battery.
2. Remove battery and tray.
3. On models with automatic transmission, remove grille. On all models, remove air filter, coolant overflow bottle and radiator expansion tank.
4. Disconnect hoses, control cables and wire harnesses.
5. Disconnect power steering hoses from pump and secure to prevent drainage of fluid.
6. On models with automatic transmission, disconnect transmission oil cooler lines.
7. On all models, remove radiator.
8. Remove fan and fan belt, starter and bellhousing access plates.
9. On air conditioned models, protect condenser with a piece of sheet metal or plywood. Unbolt AC compressor from engine leaving freon lines connected and hang it from inner fender. Route freon hoses to back of engine.
10. On all models, remove sound proofing panel clips on cowl and remove degassing tank bracket.
11. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold and disconnect intermediate exhaust muffler bracket.
12. On air conditioned models, lower the compressor cut-out switch from crossmember.
13. On all models, remove bolts and lower front crossmember. Retain crossmember with two M12 150 bolts about 70 to 100 mm long.
14. On models with automatic transmission, remove the 4 torque converter bolts. Move torque converter back from flywheel.
15. On all models, loosen the 3 engine/bellhousing bolts slightly. Remove top bolt.
16. Remove the 4 engine mount bolts on crossmember.
17. Using tool 8.0102 X or equivalent, lift engine until transmission contacts tunnel.
18. Using tool 8.0125 or equivalent, support transmission.
19. If necessary, disconnect power steering return hose going to distribution valve.
20. Remove the 2 lower bellhousing bolts and remove engine.
21. Reverse procedure to install. Torque bell housing bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (6 m-kg) and torque converter bolts to 16.31 ft. lbs. (2.25 m-kg).
