Low Coolant Level Indicator - Description

Subject: ENGINE COOLANT LEVEL WARNING ON TURBODIESEL ENGINES


The 1984 Turbodiesel models 505 and 604 are equipped with a low coolant level indicator.

If the coolant level is insufficient, the sensor which is located in the degassing tank will turn on the overheat warning light on the dashboard.



DESCRIPTION:

1 - Float assembly P.N. 1306.32

2 - Terminals for electrical connections

3 - Float

4 - Magnet

5 - Reed-contact (vacuum encased switch in a bulb-like element)

OPERATION:

When the coolant level is adequate, the float (3) will be in position (a): the reedcontact (5) will be "open", warning light will not be turned on by this circuit (see class 12 505 Workshop Manual, page H2408)

When the coolant level is inadequate, the float (3) will be in position (b): the influence of the magnetic field in the magnet
(4) as it passes the reed-contact (5) closes it and gives a passage to ground for the warning light circuit, indicating a cooling system malfunction.
