Timing Chains Replace

Fig. 4 Timing chain and sprockets:





1. Refer to ``Timing Cover, Replace'' to remove timing cover.
2. Release chain tensioner, Fig. 4.
3. Loosen eccentric rod gear fastening nut (3), Fig. 4, and move pinion to position where chain has the most slack.
4. As shown in Fig. 4, remove injection pump sprocket (1) and chain. Remove pump pinion hub and bearing.
5. Remove rod gear (2) with its eccentric.
6. Remove guide shoe and chain (4), if necessary.
7. Remove chain tensioner (6).

8. Reverse procedure to install. Position chain and sprockets as shown in Fig. 5. Adjust chain tension by turning idler sprocket eccentric so that play between tensioner pad and its support is from .020-.039 inch (.5-1.0 mm). Torque eccentric nut to 36 ft. lbs. (5 m-kg) and load tensioner by turning Allen key to the right.
