Module Replacement - Position Encoding System

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

IMPORTANT:
^ Remove the headliner.
^ The Positioning Encoding System (PES) module which is geared to the drive cables, contains the limit switches. The PES module comes from the factory preset to the sunroof glass panel CLOSED position. A Position Lock Pin has been installed by the factory on the top of the PES module and must remain there until after the installation of the sunroof actuator and PES module. This lock pin locks the drive gears in place and must be removed before the complete sunroof module is installed to the vehicle.
^ If the PES module is removed for inspection, the sunroof must be in the CLOSED position. A Position Lock Pin must be inserted. If a Position Lock Pin is not available, place two wires in the holes, the ends of a paper clip will work.
1. Move the sunroof to the closed position.
2. Remove the sunroof glass panel.
3. Remove the sunroof module.

4. If you reuse the PES module, insert the Position Lock Pin (1) in order to lock the PES module in the sunroof glass panel closed position.
5. Remove the sunroof actuator.
6. Disconnect the electrical connector from the PES module (3).
7. Remove the screw (2) which secures the PES module to the sunroof module.
8. Hold both drive cables down and lift the PES module straight up in order to remove from the sunroof module.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

IMPORTANT: The cable/cam mechanisms, on both sides of the glass, contain a set of timing holes. These holes are aligned in the sunroof glass panel CLOSED position. These holes are located on the side opposite the rear screw hole which is used in order to mount the sunroof glass panel. When installing a new Position Encoding System (PES) module, first set the sunroof glass panel to the CLOSED position.

1. Use a flat-bladed tool in order to push the cable/cam mechanism forward or rearward in order to align the cable/cam timing holes. Once the cable/cam timing holes are aligned, insert a 0.0317 mm (1/8 in) diameter pin or drill bit (1) into each set of the cable/cam timing holes and use tape in order to hold each pin in place.

IMPORTANT: The PES module comes from the factory with a Position Lock Pin installed on top of the module. This locks the timing gears in place. Do not remove the position lock pin until after the PES module and actuator are installed.

2. keeping the Position Lock Pin on the new PES module, align the module over the drive cables.
3. Apply pressure to the PES module until fully seated.
If the module does not slide down into position, the ridges on the drive cable housings are not going into the grooves on the back of the PES module. Lift each cable up into the module and then press down on the assembly until fully seated.

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

4. Install the screw which secures the PES module to the sunroof module.

Tighten
Tighten the screw to 3.4 N.m (30 lb in).

5. Connect the electrical connector to the PES module.
6. Install the sunroof actuator.
7. Remove the Position Lock Pin (1).
8. Remove the two alignment pins from the cable/cam mechanisms.
9. Install the sunroof module but do not install the headliner until after the sunroof operation has been checked.
10. Check the operation of the sunroof module.
11. Install the sunroof glass panel.
12. Inspect the sunroof module for proper sunroof glass panel adjustment Sunroof Panel Vertical Adjustment.
13. Install the headliner.
