Valve Cover: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure

^ Tools Required
- J43094 Spark Plug Boot Puller





1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure.
2. Remove the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement.
3. Remove the fuel injector sight shield bracket.





4. Disconnect the PCV feed tube (2) from the right (rear) camshaft cover.
5. Disconnect the surge tank inlet hose from the surge tank. Plug the hose. Refer to Surge Tank Hose Replacement (Inlet) or Surge Tank Hose Replacement (Outlet) in Cooling System.
6. Remove the surge tank nuts and reposition the surge tank. Refer to Surge Tank Replacement in Cooling System.
7. Remove the surge tank inlet hose/pipe bracket bolt.
8. Reposition the surge tank inlet hose/pipe and bracket.
9. Release the clips at the power steering lines. Reposition the lines as necessary.
10. Remove the engine wiring harness channel bolt from the right (rear) camshaft cover. Refer to Engine Control Component Views in Powertrain Management.
11. Remove and set aside the engine wiring harness and channel. Refer to Engine Control Component Views in Powertrain Management.
12. Remove the engine wiring harness from the retainers at the right (rear) camshaft cover. Refer to Engine Control Component Views in Powertrain Management.
13. Disconnect the oxygen sensor electrical connector.
14. Remove the right (rear) ignition coil assembly from the right (rear) camshaft cover. Refer to Ignition Coil(s) Replacement in Powertrain Management.





15. Remove the right (rear) camshaft cover retaining bolts.
16. Lift the right (rear) camshaft cover off the right (rear) cylinder head evenly.

Important: The right (rear) camshaft cover seals (perimeter and spark plug) should be reused unless they are damaged or if the perimeter seal is pulled from its groove during removal.

17. Lift the right (rear) camshaft cover off the right (rear) cylinder head evenly.
18. Insert the J43094 and rotate the spark plug boot prior to removing the boot. Remove the spark plug boots using the J43094. Inspect the spark plug boots. Replace as necessary.
19. If necessary, disassemble the camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Disassemble in Engine / Service and Repair / Unit Repair.
20. Clean and inspect the camshaft cover. Refer To Camshaft Cover Clean and Inspect in Engine / Service and Repair / Unit Repair.

Installation Procedure





1. If necessary, assemble the camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Assemble in Engine / Service and Repair / Unit Repair.
2. Wipe the right (rear) cylinder head sealing surface with a clean, lint-free cloth.
3. Inspect the right (rear) camshaft cover seals (perimeter and spark plug) for damage. Check to make sure the perimeter seal is not pulled from its groove. Replace the seals if they are damaged or pulled from the groove.
4. Place the right (rear) camshaft cover in position on the right (rear) cylinder head.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

5. Install the right (rear) camshaft cover retaining bolts (2).
Tighten the right (rear) camshaft cover retaining bolts to 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.).
6. Install the spark plug boots to the ignition coil assembly.
7. Install the right (rear) ignition coil assembly to the right (rear) camshaft cover. Refer to Ignition Coil(s) Replacement in Powertrain Management.
8. Connect the oxygen sensor electrical connector.
9. Install the engine wiring harness to the retainers at the right (rear) camshaft cover. Refer to Engine Control Component Views in Powertrain Management.
10. Install the engine wiring harness and channel. Refer to Engine Control Component Views in Powertrain Management.
11. Install the engine wiring harness channel bolt to the right (rear) camshaft cover. Refer to Engine Control Component Views in Powertrain Management.
Tighten the engine wiring harness channel bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
12. Attach the clips at the power steering lines.
13. Install the surge tank inlet hose/pipe and bracket with the bracket bolt. Refer to Surge Tank Hose Replacement (inlet) or Surge Tank Hose Replacement (Outlet) in Cooling System.
14. Install the surge tank inlet hose to the surge tank. Refer to Surge Tank Hose Replacement (Inlet) or Surge Tank Hose Replacement (Outlet) in Cooling System.
15. Install the surge tank. Refer to Surge Tank Replacement in Cooling System.
16. Connect the PCV feed tube (2) to the right (rear) camshaft cover.





17. Install the fuel injector sight shield bracket.





18. Install the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement.
19. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure.
