Starter Motor: Service and Repair
REMOVAL PROCEDURECAUTION:
- Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Cautions and Notices.
- Refer to SIR Handling Caution in Cautions and Notices.
IMPORTANT: The starter motor on this vehicle is not serviceable and must be replaced as a complete unit.
1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable.
2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
3. Remove the starter solenoid S terminal nut.
4. Remove the starter solenoid S terminal wiring harness connector at the starter motor.
5. Remove the starter solenoid BAT terminal nut.
6. Remove the starter solenoid BAT terminal wiring harness connector at the starter motor.
7. Remove the torque converter cover.
8. Remove the starter bolts. Remove the shims if necessary.
9. Remove the starter motor.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Make sure the correct starter motor is being installed. Install the starter motor to the engine.
NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
2. Install the starter bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the starter bolts to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).
3. Install the torque converter cover.
4. Install the starter solenoid BAT terminal wiring harness connector at the starter motor.
5. Install the starter solenoid BAT terminal nut.
Tighten
Tighten the starter solenoid BAT terminal nut to 10 N.m (84 lb in).
6. Install the starter solenoid S terminal wiring harness connector at the starter motor.
7. Install the starter solenoid S terminal nut.
Tighten
Tighten the starter solenoid S terminal nut to 2 N.m (20 lb in).
8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable.
