File In Section: 02 - Steering

Bulletin No.: 99-02-32-002

Date: May, 1999

TECHNICAL

Subject:
Power Steering System Noise Concerns
(Replace Power Steering Hose, Enlarge System Restrictor)

Models:
1999 Oldsmobile Alero
1999 Pontiac Grand Am
Built Prior to February, 1999
with 2.4 L or 3.4 L Engine (VINs T, E - RPOs LD9, LA1)

Condition

Some customers may comment on a rushing or grinding sound from the power steering pump. Some customers may also refer to the sound as a low-pitched moan. This sound may be audible from outside of the vehicle and/or be heard inside of the vehicle only when the steering wheel is being turned. This condition may be intermittent due to temperature and idle speed variations.

Cause

2.4L 4 cylinder engine

Vehicles equipped with the 2.4L engine may exhibit the above condition due to a low power steering fluid level. These vehicles were built with an In-line fluid restrictor that1 under cold weather conditions, may create excessive pressure on the power steering return line/hose assembly. This may result in a slow, intermittent cold temperature power steering fluid leak at the hose to line crimp.

3.4L 6 cylinder engine

Vehicles equipped with the 3.4L engine may exhibit the above condition due to an improper fluid restrictor. These vehicles may have been built with an under-sized orifice in the restrictor that may intermittently cause excessive noise.
