Oil Pan: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure

^ Tools Required
- J 39344 Harmonic Balancer Installer
- J 41816 Crankshaft Balancer Remover
- J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the drive belt.
3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
4. Drain the crankcase.
5. Remove the right front tire and wheel assembly.
6. Remove the right splash shield.
7. Remove the right front Antilock Brake System (ABS) wheel speed sensor harness from the right suspension support.
8. Remove the right front ball joint (3), the cotter pin (1), and the nut (2). Separate the ball joint from the control arm.
9. Remove the right outer tie rod cotter pin and the nut. Separate the rod from the spindle.





10. Remove the A/C compressor bolts and support the compressor.
11. Position the compressor aside. Support the compressor.
12. Remove the evaporator to the accumulator A/C line.
13. Remove the transmission flywheel inspection cover.
14. Remove the right front and the right rear engine cradle bolts.
15. Remove the crankshaft balancer.
16. Remove the starter.





17. Remove the oil pan side bolts.
18. Remove the oil pan bolts.
19. Remove the oil pan.
20. Remove the oil pan gasket.
21. Clean the following items:
^ The oil pan flanges
^ The oil pan rail
^ The front cover
^ The rear main bearing cap
^ The threaded holes

Installation Procedure





1. Install a new gasket. Place sealant on the oil pan gasket tabs if you are installing the rear main bearing cap. Place the sealer on the tabs that insert into the gasket groove of the outer surface on the main bearing cap. Use GM P/N 1052080 or the equivalent.
2. Install the oil pan.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

3. Install the oil pan retaining bolts.
^ Tighten the retaining bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).

4. Install the oil pan side bolts.
^ Tighten the side bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).

5. Position the cradle and install the bolts.
6. Install the starter.
7. Install the flywheel inspection cover.
8. Install the crankshaft balancer.
9. Install the A/C compressor to the engine.
10. Install the A/C lines from the evaporator to the accumulator.
11. Install the right side ball joint.
12. Install the right side tie rod end to the spindle.
13. Connect the right front antilock brake system (ABS) wheel speed sensor harness.
14. Install the right splash shield.
15. Install the right front tire and wheel assembly.
16. Lower the vehicle.
17. Remove the engine support fixture.
18. Install the upper and the lower radiator hoses.
19. Install the drive belt.
20. Fill the crankcase.
21. Connect the negative battery cable.
22. Recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging in Heating and Air Conditioning.
