Important: Two different sized bushings are used in the control arm. These bushings are not interchangeable, and require different combinations of special tools for removal and installation. The following service procedures refer to these bushings as 1 and 2.
1. Remove the control arm. Refer to REAR AXLE LOWER CONTROL ARM REPLACEMENT.
2. With the control arm upside-down on the bench, install the appropriate special tools:
2.1. Install the spacer.
^ Bushing 1 - use J 22222-5
^ Bushing 2 - use J 21474-12
2.2. Position the receiver tube and the J 29376-7 cap on the outer side of the control arm. Be sure the receiver tube does not contact the bushing flange.
2.3. Coat the threaded area of the long bolt with the high pressure lubricant J 23141 A and install the bolt through the receiver, the cap, and the bushing.
2.4. Install the remover on the bolt at the inner side of the control arm. Position the remover so the small diameter end contacts the bushing.
^ Bushing 1 - use J 22222-2
^ Bushing 2 - use J 28685
2.5. Place the bearing on the bolt and install the J 21474-18 long nut. The bearing must be installed between the nut and the remover.
3. Draw the bushing out of the control arm by tightening the nut.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. With e control arm upside-down on the bench, position the new bushing in the control arm.
Important: When installing new bushings, the flange end of the bushing must face outward when installed in the control arm.
2. Install the appropriate special tools:
^ Install the Spacer.
- Use J 22222-5 for Bushing 1.
- Use J 2147412 for Bushing 2.
^ Position the receiver tube and the J 29376-7 cap on the inner side of the control arm. Center the receiver tube over the hole.
^ Coat the threaded area of the long bolt with the high pressure lubricant and install the bolt through the receiver, the cap, and the bushing.
^ Position the installer J 28685 on the bolt at the outer side of the control arm. Position the installer with the large diameter contacting the bushing flange.
^ Place the bearing on the bolt and install J 21474-18 long nut. The bearing must be positioned between the nut and the installer.
3. Draw the bushing into the control arm by tightening the nut. Tighten the nut until the bushing flange seats firmly against the control arm.
4. Reinstall the control arm in the vehicle. Refer to REAR AXLE LOWER CONTROL ARM REPLACEMENT. Inspect the rear wheel alignment. Refer to PRELIMINARY ALIGNMENT INSPECTION.
