Steering Wheel Airbag Coil Replacement

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to SIR Inflator Module Handling And Storage Caution in Cautions and Notices.






1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
2. Disable the SIR system.
3. Remove the steering wheel inflator module (3).
4. Remove the steering wheel retaining nut (2).
5. Remove the steering wheel (1) from the steering column shaft.






Important: The column must be in the 12 o'clock position. To align the steering shaft assembly to the 12 o'clock position. Turn the key to the off/lock position. Pull the key out and turn the steering shaft until you hear a click.

6. The turn signal switch assembly must be in the "UP" position.
7. Pop the wire harness assembly out of the wire harness strap (1).
8. Check steering column for accident damage.






9. Remove the SIR connector (1) from the fused jumper assembly connector (2).






10. Remove the retaining ring.






11. Remove the wire protector.
12. Remove the SIR coil assembly.
13. To remove the SIR coil assembly completely refer to the upper tilt head component assembly.

Installation Procedure






1. To install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil:

^ Ensure that the wheels are straight ahead.
^ Align the block tooth and the centering mark on the race and upper shaft assembly (1) at the 12 o'clock position.






2. The new SIR coil assembly will come pre-centered.
3. If installing the existing SIR coil assembly, proceed to the next step.
4. Follow the instructions on the notice (1) of the SIR coil assembly.






Important: The column must be in the 12 o'clock position.

5. Align the steering column to the 12 o'clock position.
6. Install the hanging SIR coil assembly onto the race and upper shaft assembly.
7. The new SIR coil assembly will come precentered. Once installed, pull the tab and remove.
8. Install the wire protector into the support bracket.






9. Install the retaining ring.






10. Install the SIR coil assembly connector (1) to the fused jumper assembly connector (2).






11. Put the wire harness assembly into the wire harness strap (1).






12. Install the steering wheel (1).
13. Install the steering wheel inflator module (3).
14. Enable the SIR system.
