Fuel Pressure Pulsation Damper: Service and Repair


REMOVAL PROCEDURE

Tools Required:
^ J 34730 Fuel Pressure Gauge
^ J 35731 Fuel Sender Spanner Wrench

NOTICE: In order to prevent damage to the fuel pump, Do Not run the fuel pump unless the fuel pump is submerged in fuel.




1. Relieve the fuel system fuel pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Release / Service and Repair / Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure.

2. Drain the fuel tank (1). Refer to Fuel Tank / Service and Repair / Fuel Tank Draining.

NOTICE: Do Not handle the fuel sender assembly by the fuel pipes. The amount of leverage generated by handling the fuel pipes could damage the joints.

Fuel Tank Assembly:




3. Remove the fuel tank (2). Refer to Fuel Tank / Service and Repair.




4. Remove the fuel sender assembly from the fuel tank (1). Refer to Fuel Tank Unit / Service and Repair / Fuel Sender Assembly Replacement.




5. Inspect the position of the fuel pump fuel strainer (2) for installation.
6. Support the fuel pump (1) with one hand and grasp the fuel pump fuel strainer (2) with the other hand.
7. Rotate the strainer in one direction and pull the fuel pump fuel strainer off of the fuel pump.
8. Inspect the fuel pump fuel strainer. If the fuel pump fuel strainer is contaminated, the fuel tank should be cleaned.
9. Discard the fuel pump fuel strainer after inspection.
10. Remove the fuel pump electrical connector.
11. Place the fuel sender assembly upside down on a bench.

IMPORTANT: Replace the fuel pump if debris is found at the fuel pump inlet.

12. Pull the fuel pump downward to remove the fuel pump pulse dampener.

NOTICE: Do not run the fuel pump unless the fuel pump is submerged in fuel in order to prevent damage to the fuel pump.

13. Inspect the position of the fuel pump pulse dampener on the inlet pipe.
14. Remove the fuel pump pulse dampener from the pipe.
15. Dry the fuel pump pulse dampener with a shop towel.
16. Shake the fuel pump pulse dampener while listening for trapped fuel movement inside the fuel pump pulse dampener.
17. Replace the fuel pump pulse dampener, if fuel is heard.


INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

NOTICE: Always re-attach the fuel lines and fuel filter with all original type fasteners and hardware.

Do not repair sections of fuel pipes.

1. Install the rubber insulator on the fuel pump.
2. Position the fuel sender assembly upside down.

IMPORTANT: Always install a new fuel pump fuel strainer (2) when installing a fuel pump (1). Refer to Fuel Pump Pickup Filter Replacement.

3. Install the fuel pump at the fuel feed pipe.
4. Install the fuel pump electrical connector.
5. Position the new fuel pump fuel strainer on the fuel pump and push on the outer edge of the fuel pump fuel strainer until the fuel pump fuel strainer is fully seated.
6. Install the fuel sender assembly into the fuel tank (1). Refer to Fuel Tank Unit / Service and Repair / Fuel Sender Assembly Replacement.
7. Install the fuel tank. Refer to Fuel Tank / Service and Repair.
8. Lower the vehicle.




9. Add fuel and install the fuel tank filler pipe cap.
10. Install the negative battery cable.
11. Inspect for leaks.
11.1. Turn the ignition switch to the On position for 2 seconds.
11.2. Turn the ignition switch to the Off for 10 seconds.
11.3. Turn the ignition switch to the On position.
11.4. Check for fuel leaks.
