Removal and Replacement

REMOVAL PROCEDURE





1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable.

CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.

2. Remove the throttle body air inlet duct.
3. Install the engine support fixture.
4. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the transaxle.
5. Disconnect the automatic transaxle range selector cable from the PNP switch.
6. Remove the automatic transaxle range selector cable bracket with cable from transaxle.
7. Remove the PNP switch.
8. Remove the fluid filler tube.
9. Remove the upper transaxle bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2).
10. Remove the wiring harness grounds.
11. Raise and support the vehicle.
12. Remove the front tires and wheels.
13. Remove the engine splash shields.
14. Remove both tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.
15. Remove the frame.
16. Remove the torque converter cover.
17. Remove the starter motor.





18. Remove the flywheel to torque converter bolts.
19. Drain the transaxle fluid.
20. Disconnect the transaxle oil cooler hoses from the transaxle.
21. Disconnect the drive axles from the transaxle.
22. Secure the drive axles to the steering knuckle and struts.
23. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor wiring harness connector.
24. Remove the transaxle brace.
25. Use a transmission jack in order to support the transmission.





26. Remove the lower transaxle bolt (6) and stud (1).
27. Separate the transmission from the engine.
28. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
29. Use the J 35944-A or equivalent to flush the following components whenever the transaxle is removed for overhaul or whenever the torque converter pump or the case is replaced:
^ Flush the transaxle oil cooler(s).
^ Flush the hoses.
^ Flush the pipes.
^ Refer to AT Oil Cooler Flushing.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE





1. Use the transmission jack in order to install the transmission to the engine.
2. Install the lower transaxle bolt (6) and stud (1).
^ Tighten the lower transaxle to engine and engine to transaxle bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).

NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

3. Install the transaxle brace.
4. Remove the transmission jack.
5. Install the frame.
6. Connect the vehicle speed sensor wiring harness connector.
7. Connect the drive axles to the transaxle.
8. Connect the transaxle oil cooler hoses to the transaxle.





9. Install the flywheel to torque converter bolts.
10. Install the starter motor.
11. Install the torque converter cover.
12. Install both the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles.
13. Install the engine splash shields.
14. Install the front tires and wheels.
15. Install the fluid filler tube.
16. Lower the vehicle.





17. Install the upper transaxle bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2). and install the wiring harness grounds.
^ Tighten the upper transaxle bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2) to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).

18. Install the PNP switch.
19. Install the automatic transaxle range selector cable bracket with cable to transaxle.
20. Connect the automatic transaxle range selector cable to the PNP switch.
21. Install the wiring harness connectors to the transaxle.
22. Remove the engine support fixture.
23. Install the throttle body air inlet duct.
24. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable.
25. Inspect and adjust the toe-in, as necessary.
26. Adjust the fluid level. Refer to Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure. Testing and Inspection

NOTICE: Do NOT overfill the transaxle. The overfilling of the transaxle causes foaming, loss of fluid, shift complaints, and possible damage to the transaxle.

27. Use the J 35944-A or equivalent to flush the following components whenever the transaxle is removed for overhaul or whenever the torque converter pump or the case is replaced:
^ Flush the transaxle oil cooler(s).
^ Flush the hoses.
^ Flush the pipes.
^ Refer to AT Oil Cooler Flushing.

28. Inspect for fluid leaks.
