Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

NOTICE: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly.

1. Position the intermediate steering shaft seal in order to provide access to the lower bolt.

2. Remove the bolt at the power steering gear stub shaft (2).
3. Remove the left instrument panel insulator. Refer to INSULATOR REPLACEMENT - IP in INSTRUMENT PANEL, GAUGES AND WARNING INDICATORS.
4. Reposition the intermediate steering shaft seal in order to gain access to the upper intermediate steering shaft upper bolt (1).
5. Remove the intermediate steering shaft upper bolt.
6. Disconnect the intermediate steering shaft at the steering column.
7. Remove the intermediate steering shaft.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Position the intermediate steering shaft.

NOTICE: Always use the correct fastener in the proper location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that application. The manufacturer will call out those fasteners that require a replacement after removal. The manufacturer will also call out the fasteners that require thread lockers or thread sealant. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, do not use supplemental coatings (paints, greases, or other corrosion inhibitors) on threaded fasteners or fastener joint interfaces. Generally, such coatings adversely affect the fastener torque and joint clamping force, and may damage the fastener. When you install fasteners, use the correct tightening sequence and specifications. Following these instructions can help you avoid damage to parts and systems.
