Transmission Removal and Replacement

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

^ Tools Required
- J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture
- J 24319-B Steering Linkage Puller
- J 38892 Ball Joint Separator
- J 35944 Oil Cooler Flushing Tool





1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.

2. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
3. Remove the shift linkage from the transmission (1).
4. Remove the wiring connections from the transmission.
5. Install the J 28467-360.
6. Remove the upper transmission-to-engine bolts.
7. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
8. Remove both tire and wheel assemblies.
9. Remove the right and left splash shields.
10. Remove both front ABS wheel speed sensors and harness from left side suspension support.
11. Remove both outer tie rods from the steering knuckle assembly using the J 24319-B.
12. Remove both ball joints from the steering knuckle assembly using the J38892.
13. Remove the front suspension support brace.
14. Support the suspension support assembly and remove the bolts.
15. Lower the suspension support assembly enough to disconnect the steering coupling and both power steering fluid lines.
16. Remove both drive axles from the transmission and support.
17. Remove the engine (2) to transmission brace.
18. Remove the shift cable bracket.
19. Remove the starter.
20. Remove the transmission converter cover.
21. Mark the flywheel to torque converter relationship for reassembly.
22. Remove the torque converter-to-flywheel bolts.
23. Remove the transmission cooler pipes.
24. Remove the brake hose bracket from body.
25. Remove the transmission mount pipe expansion bolt.
26. Remove the transmission mount-to-body bolts.
27. Lower the vehicle.
28. Lower the transmission with the engine support fixture enough to remove the transmission.
29. Raise the vehicle.
30. Support the transmission.
31. Remove the transmission to engine bolts.
32. Remove the transmission.
33. For inspection and overhaul procedures, refer to Transaxle Unit Repair.
34. Flush the transmission cooler and lines with the J 35944 or equivalent during overhaul or replacement of the transmission, torque converter, oil pump or case. Refer to A/T Fluid/Filter Changing.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Place a thin film of chassis grease GM P/N 1051344 or equivalent on the torque converter pilot hub. Property seat the torque converter in the oil pump.





2. Position the transmission (1) in the vehicle.
3. Lower the transmission to the engine (2) bolts.
4. Lower the vehicle.
5. Raise the transmission with the engine support fixture.
6. Raise the vehicle.
7. Install the transmission mount-to-body bolts.
8. Remove the transmission cooler pipes.
9. Install the torque converter-to-flywheel bolts.
^ Hand start all bolts, then tighten to 62 Nm (46 ft. lbs.).

NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

10. Install the transmission converter cover.
^ Tighten the transmission converter cover bolts until fully driven, fully seated, and not stripped.

11. Install the starter.
12. Install the shift cable bracket.
^ Tighten the shift cable bracket bolt to 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the shift cable bracket nut to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).

13. Install the engine-to-transmission brace.
14. Install both drive axles.
15. Raise the suspension support assembly enough to connect the steering coupling and both power steering fluid lines.
16. Support the suspension support assembly bolts.
17. Install the front suspension support brace.
18. Install both ball joints to the steering knuckle assembly.
19. Install both front ABS wheel speed sensors and harness to the left side suspension support.
20. Install right and left splash shields.
21. Install both tire and wheels assemblies.
22. Lower the vehicle.
23. Install the upper transmission-to-engine bolts.
24. Remove the J 28467-360.
25. Install the wiring connections to the transmission.
26. Install the air cleaner assembly.
27. Install the negative battery cable.
28. Install the transmission oil. Refer to Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure (Oil Level Check).
29. Apply the brakes, turn the ignition to the ON position and shift transmission from reverse to drive.
30. Install the transmission mount pipe expansion bolt.
31. Adjust the shift linkage.
