Seals and Gaskets: Service and Repair

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

^ Tools Required
- J 38868 Stub Shaft Sleeve Remover
- J 6125-18 Slide Hammer
- J 23129 Seal Removal Tool
- J 41102 Axle Seal Installer





1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the drive axle assembly (3).





3. Remove the snap ring (57) from the stub axle shaft. Discard snap ring.
4. Pull lightly on the shaft and rotate it until the A output shaft snap ring at the differential seat in the taper on the differential side gear.
5. Remove the stub shaft (58) from the transmission using the J 6125-1B and the J 38868.
6. Remove inner snap ring.
7. Remove the right hand axle seal from the transmission using the J 23129 and the J 6125-1B or a screwdriver.
Do not the damage seal bore or the sleeve assembly or fluid leaks may result.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE





1. Install the new seal using the J 41102. Lubricate the seal lip with a light swipe of transmission oil.
2. Install the two new snap rings (57) on the stub shaft.

IMPORTANT: Carefully guide the axle shaft past the lip seal. Do not allow the shaft splines to contact any portion of the seal lip surface, otherwise damage to the seal will occur.

3. Install stub shaft (58) into the transmission using a mallet.
4. Install the drive axle.
5. Lower the vehicle.
6. Inspect for leaks.
7. Check the oil level, refer to Transmission, Fluid Checking Procedure (Oil Level Check).
