Timing Cover: Service and Repair
REMOVAL PROCEDURE^ Tools Required
- J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture
CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Drain the cooling system. Recover the cooling system. Refer to Draining, Flushing and Filling the Cooling System in Cooling and Radiator.
3. Install the J28467-360.
4. Remove the engine mount assembly. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement.
5. Remove the engine mount bracket support.
6. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belt Replacement.
7. Remove the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump in Power Steering Pump and Gear.
8. Loosen the top two A/C compressor bolts.
9. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
10. Remove the right front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Wheel Removal in Tires and Wheels.
11. Remove the right front splash shield. Refer to Splash Shield Replacement in Bumpers.
12. Remove the flywheel inspection cover.
13. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement
14. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement.
15. Remove the right wheel speed sensor connector and the wire harness from the suspension support.
16. Remove the right ball joint. Refer to Ball Joint in Suspension.
17. Remove the right stabilizer shaft from the right suspension support and the right control arm.
18. Remove the right suspension support. Refer to Suspension Support in Suspension.
19. Remove the A/C compressor to oil pan bolts.
20. Remove the oil filter.
21. Remove the oil filter adapter. Refer to Oil Filter Adapter and Valve Assembly Replacement.
22. Remove the engine to transmission brace. Refer to Transmission Brace in Automatic Transmission.
23. Drain the engine oil.
24. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter in Cranking Systems.
25. Remove the oil, pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement.
26. Remove the crankshaft sensor.
27. Remove the lower front cover bolts.
28. Lower the vehicle.
29. Remove the coolant bypass to the coolant pump and the manifold. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
30. Remove the radiator hose to the coolant outlet housing.
31. Remove the front cover bolts.
32. Remove the front cover.
33. Remove the front cover oil seal. Refer to Engine Front Cover Oil Seal Replacement.
34. Clean the mating surfaces of the following items:
34.1. The front cover
34.2. The oil pan
34.3. The cylinder block
35. Clean the sealing surfaces with degreaser.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the front cover gasket. Do not damage the sealing surfaces.
2. Apply sealer to both sides of the lower tabs of the front cover gasket. Use GM RTV sealer GM P/N 1052080 or its equivalent.
3. Install the front cover oil seal. Refer to Engine Front Cover Oil Seal Replacement.
4. Place the front cover on the engine.
5. Install the upper two front cover bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts to 21 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
6. Install the radiator hose to the coolant housing.
7. Install the coolant bypass pipe to the coolant pump and the manifold. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
8. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to General Vehicle;e Lifting and Jacking in General Information.
9. Install the lower front cover bolts.
^ Tighten the small bolts (1) to 21 Nm (115 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the large bolts (2) to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
10. Install the crankshaft sensor.
11. Install the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement.
12. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter in Cranking Systems.
13. Install the engine to transmission brace. Refer to Transmission Brace in Automatic Transmission.
14. Install the oil filter adapter.
15. Install the oil filter.
16. Install the A/C compressor to the oil pan bolts.
17. Install the right suspension support. Refer to Suspension Support in Suspension.
18. Install the stabilizer shaft to the right suspension support and the control arm.
19. Install the right ball joint. Refer to Ball Joint in Suspension.
20. Install the right wheel speed sensor connector and the wire harness to the suspension support.
21. Install the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Accessory drive Belt Tensioner Replacement.
22. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.
23. Install the flywheel inspection cover.
24. Install the right splash shield. Refer to Splash Shield Replacement in Bumpers.
25. Install the right front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Wheel Installation in Tires and Wheels.
26. Lower the vehicle.
27. Install the A/C compressor top bolts.
28. Install the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump in Power Steering Pump and Gear.
29. Install the drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belt Replacement.
30. Install the engine mount bracket support and bolts.
^ Tighten the 8 mm bolts to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the 12 mm bolts to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
31. Install the engine mount assembly. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement.
32. Remove the engine support fixture.
33. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Draining, Flushing and Filling the Cooling System in Cooling and Radiator.
34. Fill the oil.
35. Connect the negative battery cable.
