Brake Shoe: Service and Repair





REMOVAL PROCEDURE

Tools Required
- J 8049 Brake Spring Remover and Installer, or
- J 21177-A Drum to Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge

1. Remove the top springs (8) using the J 8049
2. Remove the retractor spring (6) using the J 8049
3. Remove the parking brake equalization lever (7).
4. Remove the shoe and lining assemblies after disconnecting the parking brake cable (1).
5. Remove the adjusting screw assembly (9-11)
- If any of the parts are of doubtful strength or quality due to discoloration from heat, over-stress, or worn, the parts should be replaced.
- Before reinstalling the adjusting screw (10) assembly it must be disassembled, thoroughly cleaned and lubricated.
- Clean the adjusting screw threads with a wire brush.
- Wash all the components in clean denatured alcohol.
- Apply brake lubricant GM P/N 1052196 (or equivalent) to the adjusting screw threads, inside the diameter of the socket and the socket face.
- Adequate lubrication is achieved when a continuous bead of lubricant is at the open end of the pivot nut and the socket when threads are fully engaged.
- Lubricate the 6 pads on the backing plate (5) where the brake shoes contact the backing plate.
6. Inspect the threads of the adjusting screw for smooth rotation over full length.





INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the parking brake equalization lever (2).
2. Install the retractor spring (6) using the J 8049.
3. Install the top spring (8) using J B049.
4. Install the adjusting screw assembly (9, 11).
5. Install the shoe and lining assemblies, after connecting the parking brake cable (9, 11).
