Brake Pad: Service and Repair

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

CAUTION: When servicing brake parts, do not create dust by grinding or sanding brake linings, by cleaning brake parts with a dry brush or with compressed air. Many earlier models or aftermarket brake parts may contain asbestos fibers which can become airborne if dust is created during servicing. Breathing dust containing asbestos fibers may cause serious bodily harm. A water dampened cloth or water based solution should be used to remove any dust on brake parts. Equipment is commercially available to perform this washing function. These wet methods will prevent fibers from becoming airborne.

1. Remove the upper guide pin bolt. Pivot the caliper housing away from the brake pads.

2. Remove the brake pads (2, 3).

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

IMPORTANT: Before installing the new brake pads, use denatured alcohol in order to wipe clean the outside surface of the piston boot.

IMPORTANT: After bottoming the piston (1), lift the inner edge of the boot (1) next to the piston and press out any trapped air. The boot must lay flat.

1. Bottom the piston into the caliper bore.

2. Use a C-clamp over the caliper housing (2) in order to drive the piston in. Tighten the clamp slowly in order to drive the piston into the caliper bore.
3. Take care not to damage the piston(1) or the piston boot with the C-clamp.

4. Use large adjustable pliers (3) in order to squeeze the piston into the caliper as an alternate method of driving the piston in.
5. Ensure that the convolutions are tucked back into place.

6. Install the inboard (3) and outboard (2) brake pads. The shoe must lay flat against the piston.
7. After installing the brake pads, verify that the piston boot is not touching the brake pad. If there is contact, remove the brake pad and re-seat or re-position the boot.
8. Install the inboard brake pad (3) with the wear sensor at the leading edge of the brake pad. During a forward wheel rotation, the back of the brake pad must lay flat against the caliper.
9. Pivot the caliper into the up position and install the upper guide pin bolt.
10. Apply a firm force three times to the brake pedal in order to seat the linings.
