Replacement

REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Remove 2/3 of brake fluid from master cylinder assembly.
2. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle.
3. Mark the relationship of the wheel to the hub and bearing assembly in order to ensure proper wheel balance upon reassembly.
4. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
5. Reinstall two wheel nuts in order to retain rotor to the hub and bearing assembly.
6. Push the piston into the caliper bore in order to provide clearance between the linings and rotor.

7. Install a large C-clamp over the top of the caliper housing and against the back of the outboard pad.
8. Slowly tighten C-clamp until the piston is pushed into the caliper bore enough to slide the caliper assembly off the rotor.

9. Use large adjustable pliers in order to compress the piston (1) when the caliper has been removed from the rotor and is supported. Use this as an alternate method in order to compress the caliper piston.

10. Remove the bolt (1) attaching the inlet fitting only when the caliper is to be removed from the vehicle for unit repair (overhaul). If only the brake pads are being replaced, do not disconnect the inlet fitting.
11. Plug the exposed inlet fitting into the caliper housing and brake hose in order to prevent fluid loss and contamination.

12. Remove the caliper mounting bolts (2) and sleeve assemblies.

13. Remove the caliper (2) from the rotor and the caliper bracket.
- Do not let the caliper (2) hang from the brake hose. Damage may occur.
- If the caliper assembly is not being removed from the vehicle for unit repair, suspend the caliper using a wire hook (1) from the strut.

14. Inspect the mounting guide pin bolts (10) and bores for corrosion.
15. Inspect the boots for cuts or nicks.
16. If damage to the guide pin bolts or the bores are found, replace with new parts when installing the caliper.
17. Do not attempt to polish away corrosion.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

1. Liberally coat the inside diameter of the bores (1) using silicone grease.
2. Install the mounting guide pin bolts (10) and sleeve assemblies.

NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

3. Install the caliper (3) over the rotor onto the caliper bracket.
- Tighten the mounting bolt and sleeve assemblies to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.).

4. Install the inlet fitting (1), if removed.
- Tighten the inlet fitting to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).

5. Remove the wheel nuts securing the rotor to the hub and bearing assembly.
6. Install the wheel and tire. Align the previous marks that were made during removal.
7. Lower the vehicle.
8. Tighten the wheel nuts.
9. Fill the master cylinder to the proper level with clean brake fluid.
10. Recheck the fluid level.
11. Recheck the brake pedal feel. If brake sponginess is present, refer to "Brake System Diagnosis (Hard pedal)".
