Timing Cover: Service and Repair

ENGINE FRONT COVER

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Drain engine coolant.
2. Serpentine drive belt. Refer to "Serpentine Drive Belt."
3. Hood panel.
4. Engine mount strut and air conditioning compressor bracket and engine mount strut bracket.
5. Electric engine coolant fan.
6. Install J 28467-A and J 36462.
7. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
8. Front exhaust manifold pipe.
9. Intermediate steering shaft bolt/screw and move cover aside.
10. Drain engine oil.
11. Engine splash shield.
12. Crankshaft balancer. Refer to "Crankshaft Balancer."
13. Support drivetrain and front suspension frame with floor stands.
14. Transaxle mount frame side bracket nuts from drivetrain and suspension frame.
15. Engine mount frame side nuts from drivetrain and front suspension frame. Refer to "Engine Mount."
16. Rear drivetrain and front suspension frame bolts/screws.
17. Lower drivetrain and front suspension frame.
18. Engine mount. Refer to "Engine Mount."
19. Flywheel inspection cover.
20. Starter motor.
21. Transaxle mount from oil pan.
22. Oil pan. Refer to "Oil Pan."
23. Raise drivetrain md front suspension frame.
24. Install rear drivetrain and front suspension frame bolts/screws.
25. Lower vehicle.
26. Coolant recovery reservoir.
27. Serpentine drive belt shield.
28. Power steering pump pulley.
29. Power steering pump bolts/screws and move aside power steering pump.
30. Thermostat bypass pipe clip nut from upper intake manifold.
31. Thermostat bypass pipe from coolant pump.
32. Coolant pump pulley.
33. Lower radiator outlet hose from coolant pump.
34. Serpentine drive belt tensioner. Refer to "Serpentine Drive Belt Tensioner."
35. Crankshaft position sensor from front cover.
36. Front cover bolts/screws.
37. Front cover and gasket.
38. Coolant pump from front cover.

CLEAN
^ Engine front cover and engine block gasket surfaces.

INSPECT
^ Engine front cover for damage to the seals or gasket surface. Refer to front cover seals, if necessary.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Coolant pump to front cover.
2. Gasket.

IMPORTANT
^ Coat both sides of the lower tabs of gasket with sealer, GM P/N 1052080 or equivalent.

3. Front cover.
4. Bolts/screws.

TIGHTEN
^ Large bolts/screws to 47 Nm (35 lb. ft.).
^ Small bolts/screws to 21 Nm (15 lb. ft.).

5. Crankshaft position sensor to front cover.
6. Serpentine drive belt tensioner. Refer to "Serpentine Drive Belt Tensioner."
7. Lower radiator outlet hose to coolant pump.
8. Coolant pump pulley.
9. Thermostat bypass pipe to coolant pump.
10. Thermostat bypass pipe clip nut to upper intake manifold.
11. Position power steering pump and install power steering pump bolts/screws.
12. Power steering pump pulley.
13. Serpentine drive belt shield.
14. Coolant recovery reservoir.
15. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
16. Support drivetrain and front suspension frame with floor stands.
17. Remove rear drivetrain and front suspension frame bolts/screws.
18. Lower drivetrain and front suspension frame.
19. Oil pan. Refer to "Oil Pan."
20. Transaxle mount to oil pan.
21. Starter motor.
22. Flywheel inspection cover.
23. Engine mount. Refer to "Engine Mount."
24. Raise drivetrain and front suspension frame.
25. Rear drivetrain and front suspension frame bolts/screws.
26. Engine mount frame side nuts to drivetrain and front suspension frame. Refer to "Engine Mount."
27. Remove floor stands from drivetrain and front suspension frame.
28. Crankshaft balancer. Refer to "Crankshaft Balancer."
29. Engine splash shield.
30. Intermediate steering shaft bolt/screw and cover.
31. Front exhaust manifold pipe.
32. Lower vehicle.
33. Remove J 28467-A and J 36462.
34. Electric engine coolant fan.
35. Engine mount strut and air conditioning compressor bracket and engine mount strut bracket.
36. Hood panel.
37. Serpentine drive belt. Refer to "Serpentine Drive Belt."
38. Add engine oil.
39. Refill with engine coolant and add two quarts engine coolant sealant pellets, GM P/N 3634621, or equivalent.
40. Bleed engine coolant system.
