Powertrain Controls - ECM/PCM
Code 53 Diagnostic Chart:
PCM Ignition Feed Circuit Schematic:
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The PCM monitors charging system voltage on terminal "BD16", and will
DTC 53 WILL SET WHEN
^ Voltage is greater than 17.1 volts for about 0.2 seconds. OR
^ Voltage is less than 10 volts for 240 seconds.
NOTE: During the time the failure is present, all PCM outputs will be disengaged, and additional codes may result.
ACTION TAKEN (PCM WILL DEFAULT TO)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminates. PCM outputs will be disengaged.
TEST DESCRIPTION
Number(s) below refer to circled number(s) on the diagnostic chart.
1. Normal system voltage is between 10 - 17.0 volts.
2. Checks to see if alternator is faulty under load condition. If the voltage is above 17.1 volts, refer to "STARTING AND CHARGING SYSTEMS".
DIAGNOSTIC AIDS
Charging battery with a battery charger and starting engine, may set DTC 53. If DTC sets when an accessory is operated, check for poor connections or excessive current draw. Also, check for poor connections at the starter solenoid.
