Timing Cover: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

Tool Required:
- J 38616 Camshaft and Intermediate Shaft Sprocket Removal Tool.





Remove or Disconnect
1. Secondary tensioner mounting bracket.
2. Secondary timing belt.
(Note rotation of belt for installation).
3. Secondary timing belt idler pulleys.
4. Front engine lift bracket.
5. Both cooling fans.
6. Engine coolant hoses from coolant pump.
7. Heater pipe retaining screws at frame.
8. Starter motor.
9. Torsional damper.
10. Generator. (Lay aside)
11. Oil filter.
12. Engine oil cooler assembly.
13. Oil pan front retaining nuts (2) and bolts (4).
14. Loosen remaining oil pan bolts.
15. A/C compressor and lay aside.
16. lower front cover bolts (4).
17. Leave flywheel holding tool in position.
18. Lower vehicle.
19. Intermediate shaft belt sprocket.
20. Forward lamp relay center screws. (Position relay center aside).
21. Coolant pump pulley.
22. Upper front cover bolts.
23. Front cover.
24. Gasket.

Clean
- Mating surfaces of the front cover and cylinder block.
- Sealing surfaces with degreaser.

REPLACE





Install or Connect
1. New gasket. Make sure not to damage sealing surfaces.
2. A GM sealer P/N 1052080 (or equivalent) to the lower edges of the sealing surface of the front cover.
3. Front cover.
4. Upper front cover bolts.
- Apply thread sealant GM P/N 1052080, or equivalent to cover bolts.
- Tighten bolts enough to pull the front cover against the engine block.
5. Coolant pump pulley.
6. Oil cooler coolant hose at front cover.
7. Forward lamp relay center screws.
8. Upper alternator retaining bolts.
9. Intermediate shaft belt sprocket.
10. Raise vehicle.
11. Remaining front cover retaining bolts.

Tighten:
- Large bolts to 47 N.m (35 lb. ft.)
- Small bolts to 27 N.m (20 lb. ft.)
12. Oil pan retaining bolts.

TIGHTEN:
- All oil pan retaining nuts and bolts.
- Rear bolts to 25 N.m (18 lb. ft.).
- Remaining bolts and nuts to 10 N.m (89 lb. in.).
13. Torsional damper.
