Removal

1. Raise vehicle and support on jack stands.
2. Mark relationship of wheel to axle flange, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
3. Mark relationship of brake drum to axle flange.

Backing Off Adjuster Screw:





4. Remove brake drum. If difficulty is encountered in removing the brake drum, the following steps may be of assistance.
^ Make sure parking brake is released.
^ Back off parking brake cable adjustment.
^ Remove adjusting hole knockout plate from brake backing plate and back off adjusting screw using screwdriver and adjusting tool. Use a small amount of penetrating oil applied around the drum pilot hole.
^ Use a rubber mallet to tap gently on outer rim of the drum and/or around inner drum diameter by spindle. Take care not to deform the drum by use of excessive force or bending the splash shield that surrounds the backing plate.
^ Re-install access hole plug to prevent dirt or contamination from entering the drum brake assembly.

Removing Actuator Spring:




5. Remove actuator spring (1).
^ Use J 38400 or equivalent to pry loose end of spring from adjuster actuator (2) then disengage from web of park brake shoe (8).

NOTE: During the following steps when removing the retractor spring (9) from either shoe and lining assembly , do not over stretch the spring. This will reduce its effectiveness.

Disengaging Retractor Spring:




7. Lift end of retractor spring (9) from adjuster shoe and lining assembly (6).
^ Insert hook end of J 38400 between retractor spring and adjuster shoe web.
^ Pry or twist J 38400 to lift end of spring out of shoe web hole.

WARNING: Keep fingers away from retractor spring to prevent fingers from being pinched between spring and shoe web or spring and backing plate.

10. Pry end of retractor spring (9) toward axle with flat edge of J 38400 until it snaps down off shoe web onto backing plate.
11. Remove adjuster shoe and lining assembly (6), adjuster actuator (2) and adjusting screw assembly (15).

NOTE: Do not remove parking brake cable from park brake lever (7) unless park brake ever is to be replaced.

12. Remove park brake lever (7) from park brake shoe and lining assembly.
13. Lift end of retractor spring 9) from park brake shoe and lining assembly.
^ Insert hook end of J 38400 between retractor spring and park brake shoe web.
^ Pry or twist J 38400 to lift end of spring out of shoe web hole.

WARNING: Keep fingers away from retractor spring to prevent fingers from being pinched between spring and shoe web or spring and backing plate.

16. Pry end of retractor spring (9) toward axle with flat edge of J 38400 until it snaps down off shoe web onto backing plate.
17. Remove park brake shoe and lining assembly (8).
18. Remove retractor spring (9) from anchor plate.
^ If only shoe and linings are being replaced it is not necessary to remove retractor spring.
