SECTION: 8C

SUBJECT: SPEEDOMETER WILL NOT FULLY RETURN TO ZERO - REPOSITION INSTRUMENT PANEL CARRIER

MODELS/YEARS: 1991-92 NINETY EIGHT AND 1992 EIGHTY EIGHT

CONDITION: Some 1991-92 Ninety Eight and 1992 Eighty Eight models may exhibit a condition where the speedometer will not fully return to zero when the vehicle has been brought to a full stop.

CAUSE: Pressure to the applique causes it to bubble and interfere with the speedometer cap.

CORRECTION:
1. Remove the cluster from the instrument Panel.

2. Remove the 2.5 mm (3/32 in.) shim from the Instrument Panel Carrier as shown in the illustration. This shim is approximately 25 mm (1 in.) wide and 50 mm (2 In.) long.
3. Send the cluster to an AC/Delco Repair Center. (The applique must be changed in the cluster assembly.)
4. Reinstall the cluster.
5. Check the PRNDL cable routing as per Service Manual Section 8C.
6. Exercise the PRNDL cable.
7. If the PRNDL sticks or will not return to park, remove the cluster and glue the shim to the left cluster attachment as shown below.
8. Reinstall the cluster assembly.
