Removal

Fig. 1 Drum Brake Assembly:

1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Mark relationship of wheel to axle flange, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
3. Mark relationship of brake drum to axle flange, then remove drum. If brake drum is difficult to remove, back off parking brake cable adjustment, remove inspection hole plug from backing plate, insert screwdriver through hole and press in to push parking brake lever off stop.
4. Using suitable tool, remove actuator spring, then upper return spring, Fig. 1.
5. Remove spring connecting link, adjuster actuator, and spring washer.
6. Remove hold-down springs and pins.
7. Disconnect parking brake cable, then remove shoe and lining assembly together with lower return spring.
8. Remove adjusting screw assembly, and lower return spring.
9. Remove retaining ring, pin, spring washer and parking brake lever from shoe and lining assembly.
