Engine Front Cover

FRONT COVER

TOOL REQUIRED:
- J 38616 Camshaft and Intermediate Shaft Sprocket Removal Tool.





REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Secondary tensioner mounting bracket. Service and Repair
2. Secondary timing belt. (Note rotation of belt for installation).
3. Secondary timing belt idler pulleys.
4. Front engine lift bracket.
5. Both cooling fans.
6. Engine coolant hoses from coolant pump.
7. Air hose at front exhaust pipe - manual transaxle only.
8. Heater pipe retaining screws at frame.
9. Starter motor.
10. Torsional damper. Service and Repair
11. Generator. (Lay aside)
12. Front to rear engine mount bracket brace - manual transaxle only.
13. Oil filter.
14. Engine oil cooler assembly.
15. Oil pan front retaining nuts (2) and bolts (4).
16. Loosen remaining oil pan bolts.
17. A/C compressor and lay aside.
18. Lower front cover bolts (4).
19. Leave flywheel holding tool in position.
20. Lower vehicle.
21. Timing belt drive sprocket using J 38616.
22. Forward lamp relay center screws. (Position relay center aside).
23. Coolant pump pulley.
24. Front exhaust air pipe check valve - manual transaxle only.
25. Upper front cover bolts.
26. Front cover.
27. Gasket.

CLEAN
- Mating surfaces of the front cover and cylinder block.
- Sealing surfaces with degreaser.





INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. New gasket. Make sure not to damage sealing surfaces.
2. Apply GM sealer P/N 1052080 (or equivalent) to the lower edges of the sealing surface of the front cover.
3. Front cover.
4. Upper front cover bolts.
- Apply thread sealant GM P/N 1052080, or equivalent to cover bolts.
- Tighten bolts enough to pull the front cover against the engine block.
5. Front exhaust air pipe check valve - manual transaxle only.
6. Coolant pump pulley.
7. Oil cooler coolant hose at front cover.
8. Forward lamp relay center screws.
9. Upper alternator retaining bolts.
10. Camshaft drive belt sprocket.
11. Camshaft drive belt sprocket retaining bolt using J 31096.
12. Raise vehicle.
13. Lower front cover retaining bolts.

TIGHTEN:
- Bolts to 25 Nm (18 lb. ft.)

14. Oil Pan retaining bolts.

TIGHTEN:
- Oil pan retaining nuts and bolts.
- Rear bolts to 25 Nm (18 lb. ft.).
- Remaining bolts and nuts to 10 Nm (89 lb. in.).

15. Torsional damper.
16. Generator.
17. Starter motor.
18. Front to rear engine mount bracket brace - manual transaxle only.
19. A/C compressor.
20. Engine oil cooler and hoses.
21. Oil filter.
22. Lower vehicle.
23. Heater pipe bracket retaining screws at frame.
24. Air hose to front exhaust manifold.
25. Both engine cooling fans.
26. Front engine lift bracket.
27. Secondary timing belt idler pulley.
28. Secondary timing belt. Check rotation.
29. Secondary timing belt tensioner mounting bracket.
