Timing Chain and Sprocket

TIMING CHAIN AND SPROCKET

SPECIAL TOOLS REQUIRED
- J-8433, Universal puller bridge.
- J-38611, Special legs and protector.
- J-38612, Crankshaft gear installer.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Front cover.
2. Mark position of crankshaft and intermediate shaft sprockets to timing chain.
3. Timing chain tensioner bolts.
4. Raise vehicle and suitably support.




Remove Crankshaft Sprocket 1 Of 2:




Remove Crankshaft Sprocket 2 Of 2:






5. Timing chain, crankshaft sprocket, and intermediate shaft sprocket as an assembly, using J-8433 and J-38611 on crankshaft sprocket.
- If intermediate gear does not slide off easily with timing chain, rotate the crankshaft back and forth to help loosen the tight fit.

6. Timing chain tensioner.

INSPECT:
- crankshaft alignment key for burrs or marks that could effect assembly.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Make sure crankshaft key is installed and fully seated and chain tensioner installed and blade retracted.

Parallel Alignment:






2. Slip both sprockets and chain over proper shaft and engage slot in key. Intermediate shaft may move against rear cover. Slide sprocket and chain assembly on shafts maintaining parallel alignment of sprockets.
a. Make sure snubber and tension blade of tensioner does not become caught, misaligned or dislodged.
b. Large chamfer and counterbore of crankshaft sprocket are installed toward the crankshaft. The intermediate sprocket spline sockets are installed away from the case.

Press On Crankshaft Sprocket:






c. The crankshaft sprocket must be pressed on for the final 8 mm (0.31 inch) to seated position using J-38612.
d. Verify timing is maintained.

3. Pull retaining pin from tensioner.
4. Front cover.
