Disabling the SIR System

On models equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System, the system must disabled prior to performing any service on or around SIR components, failure to disable system may result in accidental deployment and personal injury.
The diagnostic energy reserve module (DERM) can maintain sufficient voltage to cause airbag deployment for up to 10 minutes after the ignition is turned off or the battery is disconnected.
1. Position steering wheel that front wheels point straight ahead.
2. Turn ignition switch to Lock position.
3. Remove SIR fuse from fuse block, (12).
4. Disconnect yellow two-way SIR harness and clip at base of steering wheel.
5. Reverse to enable system, then turn ignition switch to Run position ensuring inflatable restraint indicator flashes 7 to 9 times then goes off.
