Cylinder Head Gasket/Bolts - Revised Torque Procedure
NUMBER: 93-U-14CORP.REF.NO: 276113
DATE: December 1992
SECTION: 6A, L4
SUBJECT:
NEW CYLINDER HEAD GASKET/BOLTS/TIGHTENING PROCEDURE
MODELS/YEARS:
1992-93 ACHIEVA WITH THE 2.3L (VIN A, D & 3) ENGINE
DESCRIPTION:
Cylinder head gaskets designed for the 1992-93 2.3L engines require different fastener tightening specifications.
Later model 1993 2.3L engines have a new cylinder head bolt design and require a new fastener tightening specification. The new bolts can be identified by the captured washer and the threads that continue for the length of the bolt (refer to Figures 1 and 2).
Refer to the tightening procedure and Figure 1 for the 1992-93 2.3L engines with the old bolt design. Refer to the tightening procedure and Figure 2 for the later 1993 2.3L engines with the new bolt design.
NEW FASTENER TIGHTENING SPECIFICATION AND PROCEDURE:
Note:
The following tightening procedure must be used to assure gasket life. Failure to follow this procedure exactly may result in cylinder head gasket leakage.
Note:
Steps A and B Pre-Condition The Cylinder Head Gasket.
A. Install and tighten cylinder head bolts to the N-m (lbs.ft.) specification in SEQUENCE using J 36660. Refer to Figure 1 for old bolt design and specification and Figure 2 for new bolt design and specification.
B. After completing Step A on all ten bolts, in SEQUENCE tighten the cylinder head bolts the additional degrees indicated in Figures 1 or 2 (Figure 1 for old bolt design and Figure 2 for new bolt design) using J 36660.
C. In SEQUENCE, loosen each bolt one turn and immediately retighten it to the N-m (lbs.ft.) specification (refer to Figure 1 for old bolt design and specification, and Figure 2 for new bolt design and specification).
D. After completing Step C on all ten bolts, in SEQUENCE tighten the cylinder head bolts the additional degrees indicated in Figures 1 and 2 (Figure 1 for old bolt design and Figure 2 for new bolt design) using J 36660.
