Throttle Body: Service and Repair

Throttle Body Removal:

Throttle Body Assembly:

NOTE: DO NOT immerse throttle body in cold immersion type cleaner. Soaking the throttle body in liquid cleaners will wash the lubricant from the sealed throttle shaft bearings and wash the factory applied DAG material from the throttle valve. DO NOT expose the throttle position sensor (TPS) and idle air control (IAC) to liquid cleaners as damage to these parts may result.

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Partially drain the radiator, to allow the coolant hoses to be removed from the throttle body.
3. Remove the air cleaner to throttle body duct.
4. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the IAC valve and the TPS.
5. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the top of the throttle body.
6. Remove the accelerator cable bracket attaching nut and bolt.
7. Disconnect and remove the throttle, cruise, and transmission control cables.
8. Remove the power brake vacuum hose from the throttle body.
9. Remove the throttle body attaching bolt and stud.
10. Loosen the throttle body from the manifold.
11. Remove the coolant lines from throttle body.
12. Remove the throttle body and gasket.

INSTALLATION
1. Position the throttle body next to the manifold and connect the coolant lines.
2. Install a new throttle body gasket.
3. Install the throttle body attaching bolt and stud, and tighten to 26.0 N-m. (19 lb. ft).
4. Connect the power brake vacuum hose to the throttle body.
5. Connect the throttle, cruise and transmission control cables to the throttle body.
6. Install the accelerator cable bracket attaching bolt and nut, and tighten:
^ Nut to 25.0 N-m (18 lb. ft.).
^ Bolt to 12.0 N-m (106 lb. in.).
7. Connect the vacuum hoses to throttle body.
8. Connect the electrical connectors to the IAC valve and the TPS.
9. Install the air cleaner to the throttle body duct.
10. Refill the radiator.
11. Connect the negative battery cable.
12. With the engine "OFF," check to see that the accelerator pedal is free. Depress the pedal to the floor and release.
13. Reset the IAC valve pintle position:
a. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position (engine "OFF").
b. Ground the diagnostic "test" terminal for five seconds.
c. Remove the ground.
d. Turn the ignition "OFF" for ten seconds.
e. Start the engine and check for proper idle operation.
