Campaign - Ignition Coil Housing Cracked: Overview

CORPORATE CAMPAIGN #: 90-C-52

DATE: JUNE 1995

SERVICE MANUAL SECTION: 6E

SUBJECT:
INTEGRATED DIRECT IGNITION (I.D.I.) COIL HOUSING CRACKED

YEAR: 1990

MODEL:
CUTLASS SUPREME w/2.3L (RPO LD2) VIN D & CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS (RPO NB2)

DEFECT INVOLVED

General Motors has decided that certain 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme model vehicles equipped with the 2.3L engine and California emissions (RPO NB2) may have an I.D.I. (Integrated Direct Ignition) coil housing that may crack. This may cause the engine to miss and run rough.

To prevent these conditions from occurring, retailers are to replace the I.D.I. coil housing on affected vehicles.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Involved are 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme model vehicles equipped with the 2.3L (RPO LD2) VIN D engine and California Emissions (RPO NB2), within the VIN breakpoints as shown.

All vehicles listed on the retailer printout will require inspection and/or correction. Campaign involvement, or campaign completion of any vehicle(s) in question, can be verified by utilizing VISS (Vehicle Information Service System).

Involved vehicles have been identified by Vehicle Identification Number listings. Computer listings contain the complete Vehicle Identification Number, owner name and address data, and are furnished to involved retailers with the campaign bulletin. Owner name and address data furnished will enable retailers to follow-up with owners involved in this campaign.

These listings may contain owner names and addresses obtained from State Motor Vehicle Registration Records The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign. Any retailer not receiving a computer listing with the campaign bulletin has no involved vehicles currently assigned.

PARTS INFORMATION

To ensure that any parts your retail facility may require are obtained as soon as possible, order them from GMSPO (General Motors Service Parts Operations) on a C.I.O. order, with no special instruction code, but order on an advise code (2). All Goodwrench part system test retailers should order on a "VIP" order.

OWNER NOTIFICATION

Owners will be notified of this recall on their vehicles by Oldsmobile Division (see copy of the owner letter included with this bulletin).

RETAILER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY

Retailers are to perform this campaign on all involved vehicles at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or if it is in your retail facility for service, you are to ensure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

Retailers are to contact owners of vehicles recently sold from your new or used vehicle inventory and arrange for the campaign correction to be performed.

California retailers are reminded that they must provide vehicle owners with a "Vehicle Emission Recall Proof of Correction" certificate when performing the emission campaign so owners can prove to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) that the emission campaign correction was performed. Failure to provide the owner with the certificate may cause a delay in the owner being able to renew their vehicle registration and may cause customer dissatisfaction.

Please confirm that service staff are currently trained in providing the certificate and that certificate pads are on hand.

Retailers with vehicles to correct will also receive a printout of vehicles identification numbers, owner names and addresses in VIN Sequence (in California, VIN's only, no names or addresses). This data will enable you to follow-up with involved owners.

Your cooperation in completing this campaign as soon as possible will be greatly appreciated.

VEHICLE EMISSION RECALL PROOF OF CORRECTION CERTIFICATE (CALIFORNIA ONLY)

When an emission campaign is completed, California retailers MUST give the vehicle owner a certificate to present to the California DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) when renewing vehicle registration. Without this certificate, the owner may be unable to renew vehicle registration, causing customer dissatisfaction.

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

Each label provides space to include the subject corporate campaign number and the Oldsmobile retailer identification code of the retailer completing the campaign service. This information must be inserted with a ball point pen. Servicing retailers are to ensure that these numbers are recorded and the label is properly affixed on a clean, dry surface of the radiator core support in an area clearly visible when the hood is raised. This label is to be used in conjunction with a clear protective plastic cover which will also be provided to retailers when labels are ordered. Additional labels and covers are available at no charge to you in sheet stock of forty nine (49) per sheet from the following source:

Claims for customer reimbursement on previously paid repairs are to be submitted according to the Warranty Claim Information instructions. Use the "Owner Reimbursement" labor operation and list all owner expenses concerning previous repairs in the net items column of the warranty claim.

NOTE:
When a customer requests reimbursement, and the vehicle is still available, retailers are to inspect and replace, if necessary, as called for in the SERVICE PROCEDURE of this bulletin.
