Timing Cover: Description and Operation

Disassembled Upper Engine:

The cast-aluminum timing chain housing, (47) is attached to the block and camshaft carriers. The housing includes the idler sprocket and bearing which drives the water pump.

Engine Front Cover:

The stamped-steel front cover houses the front crankshaft seal and the camshaft mass damper, used to reduce camshaft drive noise.
