STOPLAMP SWITCH REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

1. Write down the owner's preset memory settings which will be lost when the battery is disconnected for reference later when resetting the memory functions. If a memory retention device is plugged into the cigarette lighter socket (such as "Memor-Eze"; Snap-On Tool YA960; or Kent-Moore KS295A), this step can be omitted.

2. Raise and support the hood.

3. Then (for the V-6), remove the air cleaner assembly, and with the ignition in the "off" position, disconnect the negative battery cable. Removing the air cleaner on the Quad 4 is at the technician's discretion.

4. Enter the passenger compartment and remove left side sound insulator panel and slide steering shaft protective sleeve towards the front compartment wall.

5. Remove the air distribution tube and pull down. Remove the retainer clip holding the stoplamp switch to the column bracket.

6. Disconnect the switch arm from the pedal assembly by pushing the arm over and off the brake pedal pin. Release the switch by pulling down and releasing the top snap clip.

7. Disconnect the four wire and two wire electrical connectors from the switch (the connector position assurance - CPA - locking pins must also be removed). The two wire connector is present only on vehicles with cruise control.

8. Remove the Brake Stoplamp Switch Assembly.

9. Obtain a new Brake Stoplamp Assembly, P/N 10180504. If vehicle is equipped with cruise control, connect the two wire connector and CPA locking pin to the new switch. Do NOT install the four wire connector at this time.

10. Install new switch assembly by pushing switch up until seated into top snap clip. Do not attach the switch arm to the pin on the brake pedal assembly at this time.

NOTICE: Make sure the brake switch is NOT adjusted (metal clip on actuator should NOT be engaged with the serrations on the bottom of the carrier), as shown in Figure 2, Cutaway View (A). Otherwise it will be necessary later to perform the "STOPLAMP SWITCH ADJUSTMENT" procedure.

11. Install the retainer clip which holds the switch to the steering column bracket. Push the brake pedal down (forward) to the floor pan and install the switch arm over and onto the brake pedal pin.

12. Slowly pull the brake pedal all the way rearward and listen for the switch to ratchet to the set position. At least three (3) clicks of the ratchet must be heard.

13. Connect the four wire connector and CPA locking pin.

14. Reinstall the air distribution tube. Position the steering shaft protective sleeve.

15. Reconnect the negative battery cable. If a memory retention devide was not used, please reset (to the extent possible) all devices that lost their memory after the battery was disconnected (such as radio preset stations, electronic a/c, Driver Information System, and clock).

16. Inspect the stoplamp switch operation. If stoplamps do not operate properly, refer to the "STOPLAMP SWITCH ADJUSTMENT" section of this bulletin. If the stoplamps do not operate properly, continue to step 17.

17. For vehicles equipped with cruise control, check the setting of the cruise control vacuum dump switch. With the brake pedal at rest, make sure the plunger is fully seated into the barrel. If it is not fully seated, push the dump switch forward until the plunger is inside the barrel and then pull rearward on the brake pedal to properly set the switch. If the plunger is already fully seated into the barrel, the dump switch Is already properly set and no further adjustment is required.

18. Install left side sound insulator panel.

19. Return to the engine compartment and install air cleaner assembly (if required).

20. Install a Campaign Identification Label.

21. If the vehicle has a V6 engine, set the parking brake, and secure the drive wheels. Then connect a Tech 1 to the ALDL and perform the idle learn procedure as listed in the Tech 1 manual.
