INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Timing chain housing and new gaskets (no sealer needed).
2. Lower engine back onto mounts.
3. Eight (8) chain housing to camshaft housing bolts hand tight.
4. Raise vehicle.
5. Timing chain housing to block fasteners (Items 48 and 49) hand tight.

NOTE: Do not install the timing chain tensioner shoe pivot stud until after the timing chain is in place.

6. Oil pan to timing chain housing bolts hand tight.

Timing Chain Housing Fasteners:

7. Tighten timing chain housing to block fasteners (Items 48 and 49) to 26 Nm (19 lbs. ft.).
8. Oil/Air separator hose to chain housing.
9. Tighten oil pan to timing chain housing bolts to 12 Nm (106 lbs. in.).
10. Chain housing to belt tensioner bracket brace (Items 147, 149 and 150).
11. Lowest front cover retaining stud into timing chain housing.
12. Lower vehicle.
13. Tighten timing chain housing to camshaft housing bolts
14. Camshaft sprockets to both camshafts.

NOTE: Sprockets are identical and interchangeable.

15. Camshaft sprocket bolts and washers. Tighten to 70 Nm (52 lbs. ft.) while holding sprockets with tool J 36013 or equivalent camshaft sprocket wrench. Use Adhesive/Sealant Compound GM P/N 12345493 or equivalent on camshaft sprocket bolts.
16. Oil air separator hose to chain housing.
17. Coolant pump assembly to timing chain housing and install nuts hand tight. Lubricate splines with Chassis Grease GM P/N 1051344 or equivalent.
If installing a replacement timing chain housing lube "0" ring with an anti-freeze solution, then slide coolant pump cover over radiator outlet pipe (Do not damage "0" ring). Install and rotate bolts just enough to close all gaps in this order:
- Cover to pump assembly.
- Cover to block.
- Cover to inlet.
- Tighten bolts/nuts completely to specifications in order:
- Pump assembly to chain housing nuts and torque to 26 Nm (19 lbs. in.)
- Pump cover to pump assembly and torque 14 Nm (124 lbs. in.).
- Cover to block, bottom bolt first and torque to 26 Nm (19 lbs. in.)
- Inlet to cover.

Exhaust Manifold:

- Exhaust manifold to cylinder head retaining nuts (160), follow the tightening sequence and tighten to 42 Nm (31 lbs. ft.).
- Exhaust manifold brace to manifold bolt and torque to 54 Nm (40 lbs. ft.).
18. Timing chain.
19. Front cover and new gaskets.
- Front cover upper fasteners hand tight.
20. Oil/Air separator hose to front cover.
21. Raise vehicle.
22. Front cover lower fasteners and tighten to 12 Nm (106 lbs. in.).
23. Coolant pump assembly to timing chain nuts (if not previously installed). Tighten to 26 Nm (19 lbs. ft.).
24. Lubricate front seal and sealing surface of crankshaft balancer with chassis grease GM P/N 1051344 or equivalent.
25. Crankshaft balancer tap in place using a rubber or sand filled mallets
26. Crankshaft balancer retaining bolt and washer. Tighten to 150Nm (110 lbs. ft.) while using tool J 38122 harmonic balancer holder to prevent crankshaft rotation.

NOTE: If re-using the same timing chain housing, skip steps 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, and 36.

27. Index exhaust manifold nuts into exhaust pipe flange.
28. Using a 5.5 mm (7/32") socket start both nuts. Rotate counterclockwise (as if loosening a right hand thread nut or installing nut with left hand threads).
29. Turn both nuts in evenly to avoid cocking the exhaust pipe and binding the nuts. Rotate nut in until fully seated.
30. Right lower splash shield.
31. Right front tire and wheel assembly.
32. Lower vehicle.
33. Tighten upper front cover fasteners to specification 12 Nm (106 lbs. in.).
34. With a 13 mm wrench, tighten the manifold to exhaust pipe nuts to 26 Nm (19 lbs. ft.).
35. Exhaust manifold shields.
36. Oxygen sensor connector.
37. Serpentine drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt.

WARNING: To avoid personal injury when rotating the serpentine belt tensioner, use a tight fitting 13 mm wrench that is as least 61 cm (24") long. This operation can be done using available tool J 36059 (or equivalent).

38. Coolant surge tank using hose clamp tool J 37097 or equivalent.
39. If drained, fill surge tank with coolant until coolant reaches heater hose water outlet then install hose with hose clamp tool J 37097 (this will assist with complete cylinder block fill) then continue fill
40. Negative battery cable.
41. Start engine inspect for oil and coolant leaks.
