Charging System - Insufficient Charging

88olds04
NUMBER: 88-T-29

CORP. REF. NO.: 836404

DATE: February 1988

SECTION: 6D
SUBJECT INSUFFICIENT CHARGING

MODELS/YEARS 1987-88 CUTLASS CIERA, FIRENZA AND
CUTLASS SUPREME MODELS WITH 2.8L (LB6) V-6 ENGINE
CONDITION:

The vehicles listed above may have a charging system that is charging at a lower voltage than is required to properly charge the battery.

CAUSE:

The generator may have an insufficient ground path to the engine block. The aluminum bracket is mounted to a painted steel engine lift hook, and the fasteners are phosphate coated (black color, poor conductor). Under this condition, the generator is working properly although the voltage to the battery is reduced, which can cause the battery to be undercharged.

FIGURE 1:

CORRECTION:

1. Remove either of the existing nuts shown in Figure 1. If the stud is already cadmium plated (silver colored), this procedure is not required. Use normal service manual procedures to determine condition.

2. Wire brush the stud to a bare metal appearance on some of the threads.

3. Replace the nut with part number 11502812. This nut has an electrically conductive coating (cadmium) for proper grounding.

4. Vehicles made after approximately January 1, 1988 should have a cadmium plated stud already installed from the factory.
