Condition, Vehicles Involved, Dealer Action & Service Procedure Information

CONDITION

General Motors has determined a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in some 1987 Delta 88 and Ninety-Eight models. These vehicles have in-line fusible links located in the area of the plastic windshield washer bottle bracket. Under a high resistance load, the in-line fusible link may melt and ignite the windshield washer bottle bracket resulting in an engine compartment fire without prior warning.

DEALER ACTION

To correct this condition, dealers are to replace the windshield washer bottle bracket as instructed in the Service Procedure of this Product Campaign Bulletin.

Dealers are to perform this campaign on all involved vehicles at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used car inventory, or it is in your dealership for service, you are to ensure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

Dealers are to contact owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory and arrange for the campaign correction to be performed.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Open vehicle hood, cover right front fender, and disconnect negative battery cable at battery.

2. Remove engine compartment right front sight shield. Disconnect positive and negative junction block leads at right wheelhouse on windshield washer bottle bracket studs.

3. Remove two screws securing washer fluid bottle to bracket. Set washer fluid bottle off of bracket leaving washer pump and fluid line attached.
4. Remove two screws holding windsheild washer bottle bracket to right wheelhouse.

5. Install new windshield washer bottle bracket, Part Number 25533178. Torque bracket retaining screws to 6 N-m (53 in.lbs.).

6. Reverse Steps 1 to 3 to reassemble. Torque junction block negative nut to 8 N-m (70 in.lbs.), and positive nut to 17 N-m (13 ft.lbs.).

7. Connect negative battery cable. Torque bolt to 12 N-m (106 in.lbs.).

8. Install a Campaign Identification Label.
