SUBJECT: "PASS BY" NOISE LEVEL VIOLATIONS-CERTAIN 1987 CALAIS MODELS GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT CERTAIN '87 OLDSMOBILE CALAIS MODELS EQUIPPED WITH A 3.0L LN7 ENGINE & 2.84 (F17) TRANSAXLE RATIO MAY EXCEED VEHICLE "PASS BY" NOISE LEVEL REGULATIONS ESTABLISHED IN THE FOLLOWING

TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION, IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO RETROFIT INVOLVED VEHICLES WITH A NEW INSULATED RIGHT-HAND ENGINE SPLASH SHIELD.

INVOLVED ARE CERTAIN 1987 OLDSMOBILE CALAIS MODELS EQUIPPED WITH A 3.0L LN7 ENGINE & 2.84 (F17) TRANSAXLE GEAR RATIO WITHIN THE FOLLOWING VIN BREAKPOINTS:
BEGINNING - START OF PRODUCTION THROUGH - HM264393
DEALER ACTION:
DEALERS WITHIN THE AREAS LISTED ABOVE ARE TO STOP THE SALE OF INVOLVED VEHICLES IMMEDIATELY. VEHICLES MUST BE RETROFITTED PRIOR TO SALE IN NOISE REGULATED AREAS. A SUFFICIENT QUANTITY OF NEW SPLASH SHIELDS AND A LETTER PROVIDING COMPLETE RETROFIT INFORMATION WILL BE MAILED TO ALL AFFECTED DEALERS THIS WEEK.

SUBJECT: RIGHT HAND ENGINE SPLASH SHIELD RETROFIT - "PASS BY" NOISE LEVEL VIOLATION - CERTAIN 1987 CALAIS MODELS EQUIPPED WITH A 3.0L ENGINE AND 2.84 TRANSAXLE RATIO
General Motors has determined that certain 1987 Oldsmobile Calais models equipped with a 3.0L LN7 engine and 2.84 (FI7) transaxle ratio may not comply with established "pass by" noise level regulations in the states, counties, and cities listed above.
VEHICLES INVOLVED
Involved are certain new and unsold 1987 Oldsmobile Calais models (including dealer demonstrators) equipped with a 3.0L LN7 engine and 2.84 (F17) transaxle gear ratio within the following VIN breakpoints:

Lansing (M) Start of Production HM264392
A computer printout of vehicles involved at your dealership is attached to this letter.
Only those vehicles which are new and unsold (including dealer demonstrators) and currently in the inventory of Oldsmobile dealers located in the areas listed above are involved. It will not be necessary to make this modification on subject vehicles already delivered to owners.
DEALER ACTION
To correct this condition, dealers are to retrofit subject vehicles with a new insulated right hand engine splash shield as instructed in the following Service Procedure. Vehicles must be retrofitted prior to sale in noise regulated areas.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Raise vehicle and remove the right hand tire and wheel assembly.
2. Remove existing engine splash shield. Refer to illustration.
3. Install new insulated engine splash shield as shown in illustration.
4. Install tire and wheel assembly. Torque wheel nuts to 140 N-m (100 ft.lbs.).
PARTS INFORMATION
A quantity of new insulated right hand engine splash shields equal to the number of involved vehicles each dealer has to retrofit is being shipped (under separate cover) directly to affected dealers. These splash shields are being provided on a "no charge" basis. They WILL NOT BE billed on the dealer's parts account. Dealers should not order from GMSPO.

A parts allowance of $.91 (30% of the dealer price of the "furnished" engine splash shield) may be applied for in the Dealer Material Allowance column (sublet column) of the warranty claim.
