Dear Oldsmobile Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

REASON FOR RECALL

General Motors has determined a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in some 1987 Calais models equipped with 2.5L engines and 5-speed manual transaxles. The fuel feed or fuel return hose at the engine may rub against a shift lever on the 5-speed transaxle. With time, a hole could be rubbed through the hose and fuel could leak into the engine compartment. Under certain circumstances, this could result in an underhood fire.

WHAT WE WILL DO

To prevent the possibility of this condition occurring, the Fuel Feed and Return Hose/Pipe Assembly at the engine will be replaced for you at no charge.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

Contact your Oldsmobile Dealer to arrange a service date. Instructions for this service have been sent to your Dealer. It is estimated that parts will be available to your dealer on or about March 23, 1988. The labor time necessary to perform this service is about one (1) hour. Please ask your dealer if you wish to know how much additional time will be necessary to process your vehicle.

Your Oldsmobile Dealer is best equipped to obtain parts and provide service to promptly correct your vehicle. However, if you take your vehicle to your dealer on the agreed service date, and they do not remedy this condition then or within five days, we suggest you contact the nearest Oldsmobile Zone Office, either in person or by telephone. The Zone Office will assist you and the dealer in getting your vehicle corrected. The locations and telephone numbers of the Zone offices are listed in the Warranty and Owner Assistance Information booklet.

After contacting your dealer and the Zone Office, if you are still not satisfied that we have done our best to remedy this condition without charge and within a reasonable time, you may write the Administrator, National Hightway Traffic Safety Administration, 400 Seventh St., S.W., Washington, D.C. 20590 or call 800-424-9393 (Washington, D.C. residents call 366-0123).

Please give the enclosed owner reply card to your dealer so they can quickly identify your vehicle and the condition which needs correcting. If you no longer have this vehicle, please let us know by filling in the card and mailing it back to us. The postage has been paid for you.

We are sorry to cause you this inconvenience; however, we have taken this action for your safety and continued satisfaction with our products.

To All Oldsmobile Dealers:

Oldsmobile Division is releasing Campaign 87-C-10 involving some 1987 Calais models equipped with 2.5L engines and 5-speed manual transaxles. The Fuel Feed or Fuel Return Hose at the engine may rub against a shift lever on the 5-speed transaxle. With time, a hole could be rubbed through the hose and fuel could leak into the engine compartment. Under certain circumstances, this could result in an underhood fire.

To prevent the possibility of this occurring, dealers are to replace the Fuel Feed and Return Hose/Pipe Assemblies at the engine on involved vehicles as directed in Product Campaign 87-C-10.

The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, as amended, provides that each vehicle which is subject to a recall campaign of this type must be adequately repaired within a reasonable time after the owner has tendered it for repair. A failure to adequately repair within 60 days after tender of a vehicle is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time.

If the condition is not adequately repaired within a reasonable time, the owners may be entitled to an identical or reasonably equivalent vehicle at no charge or to a refund of the purchase price less a reasonable allowance for depreciation.

To avoid having to provide these burdensome solutions, every effort must be made to promptly schedule an appointment with each owner and to repair their vehicle as soon as possible. As you will see in reading the attached copy of the letter which is being sent to owners, the owners are being instructed to contact the nearest Oldsmobile Zone Office if their dealer does not remedy the condition within five days of the mutually agreed upon service date. If the condition is not remedied within a reasonable time, they are instructed on how to contact the National Traffic Safety Administration.

If your dealership has vehicles involved in this campaign, you will receive with the campaign bulletin two lists of Vehicle Identification Numbers, owner names and addresses: one by VIN sequence; one in alphabetical sequence by owner. This data will enable you to follow up with involved dealers.
We urge you to limit the use of these lists to the follow-up needed for this campaign. Names and addresses from State Vehicle Registration files may be included; it is illegal in may states to use such data outside of campaigns.

Enclosed with this letter are:

Two Product Campaign Bulletins 87-C-10 Copy of Owner Letter

Dealers with vehicles to correct will also receive:

One Printout of Vehicles in VIN Sequence One Printout of Vehicles in Alphabetical Sequence by Owner

Your cooperation in completing this campaign as soon as possible will be greatly appreciated.
