Owner Letter

Dear Oldsmobile Owner

This notice is to inform you Oldsmobile Division is conducting an emission recall that includes your vehicle.

REASON FOR RECALL

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) testing has shown that certain 1985 Oldsmobile Calais, Cutlass Ciera, Cutlass Cruiser and NinetyEight models equipped with 3.0L or 3.8L Multiport Fuel Injected (MFI) engines and Federal emissions equipment may be emitting pollutants in excess of the Federal Emission Standards. These standards were established to protect the public health and/or welfare from the dangers of air pollution. This condition could cause a vehicle to fail an emission test, if required under state or local law.

WHAT WE WILL DO

To correct this condition, the PROM assembly in the engine Electronic Control Module (ECM) will be replaced at no charge to you.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

Contact your Oldsmobile Dealer to arrange a service date. Instructions have been sent to your Dealer. It is estimated that parts will be available to your dealer on June 1, 1990. Please ask your dealer if you wish an estimate of the total time needed to schedule, process and return your vehicle. Included in this time would be about twenty (20) minutes for a technician to replace the PROM.

Please give the enclosed owner reply card to your dealer so they can quickly identify your vehicle and the condition which needs correcting. If you no longer have this vehicle, please let us know by filling in the card and mailing it back to us. The postage has been paid for you.

Should your dealer not schedule a service date within a reasonable time, please contact the nearest Oldsmobile Zone Office, either in person or by telephone. The locations and telephone numbers of the Zone offices are listed in the Warranty and Owner Assistance Information booklet. If the zone Office has moved since the booklet was published, please ask your dealer to supply the new address and telephone number.
If your dealer and Oldsmobile Zone Office are unable to remedy the condition within a reasonable time, you may wish to advise the
Environmental Protection Agency at the following address: Director Manufacturers Operations Division (EN-340F), United States Environmental Protection Agency, 401 M. Street, S.W., Washington, DC 20460

To ensure your full protection under the emission warranty made applicable to your vehicle by Federal Law, and your right to participate in future recalls, it is recommended that you have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible. Failure to do so could legally be determined to be lack of proper maintenance of your vehicle. Also, your vehicle may fail a state or local emission inspection test if the recall work is not accomplished.

Should your dealer find that your emission system has been intentionally disabled, you will be asked if you wish the system to be restored so that it will function as designed. The cost of such restoration will be your responsibility.

We are sorry for this inconvenience; however, we took this action to assure that your vehicle meets applicable government emission requirements and in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our products.
